The City of Lumberton operates under the council-manager form of government. The City Council is composed of the Mayor and eight ward CommissionersThe Mayor and Council members are elected in non-partisan elections for staggered four-year terms, with elections being held every two years. The Commissioners are elected by ward and must reside in the ward they represent.The Mayor presides at all council meetings and is recognized as the official head of the town for ceremonial purposes. However, the mayor does not vote on matters coming before the council except in the event of a tie.The Town Manager, appointed by town council, carries out the laws and policies enacted by council members. The town manager is responsible for managing the town employees and overseeing town finances, resources, and departments. The Lumberton City Council also appoints a town attorney, who represents the town administration and town council in all legal matters.
