I have a: MBA & MS in Political Science. I have 30 years of leadership experience serving in the US Navy. I served as Commanding Officer of various Naval Bases with over 1000 personnel working for me and a $100M annual budget. I understand fiscal responsibility. The Navy also taught me the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment that guide my life.
I have two years experience as Executive Director of a nonprofit, four years serving on Brevard City Council and four years serving as Mayor.
I believe my leadership experience, detailed knowledge of the City from 8 years of elected office, my wide ranging community involvement and collaborative team building skills uniquely qualify me.
1. Continue with proactive and city-led measures to create more affordable and workforce housing.
2. Improve our infrastructure to support future growth. This includes our water, wastewater, roads, sidewalks and trails.
3. Ensure a high quality of life for all residents. This includes ensuring the safety of our community, living wage jobs, housing, accessible/high quality healthcare, and well designed and accessible community spaces.
I will: prioritize the completion of the Azaela Avenue project (50 affordable apartments); partner with Transylvania County, regional housing organizations, non-profits, for-profit organizations and private investors to promote a creative and collaborative approach to develop and fund solutions; ensure our ordinances/zoning encourages development of different housing options; develop market positive incentives for preservation and creation of new workforce housing; review land usage across the city to identify areas for further development; expand utilities along NC280 and US 64 corridors; develop a comprehensive Housing Plan with annual goals and both short term and long term actions.
My vision for Brevard centers around YOU -our residents and local business owners. As your Mayor, council member, community volunteer, and neighbor, I have worked to strengthen our community and protect our quality of life. As Mayor I will focus on ensuring our town continues to thrive while making sure that community needs are front and center in our decision making.
We are fortunate to live in a beautiful natural area, in a town with caring neighbors, historic character and small-town charm. Our history, our natural resources and the values of our community are what make Brevard special and I will protect and preserve these while continuing to nurture a strong and vibrant economy and plan for the future growth of our town.
