I have worked in municipal and county government most of my working time. As a city and county employee, I have been through recessions, natural disasters and public distrust with their elected and appointed officials. I know what it takes to survive and rebound. My best skills are listening to the publics concerns and following up with some type of solution. I also know that sometimes, despite your best efforts, you simply cannot please some people.
1) Continue to revitalize our downtown. With the opening of the new fire department, we have a prime parcel in the downtown area that we must decide what to do with. It would be the perfect location for a restaurant, which will attract other businesses. 2) Attract new businesses, such as restaurants, retail stores and possibly a motel to the Startown Road/Hwy 321 corridor. 3) Keeping the property tax on our residents as low as possible.
I will involve the residents and business owners in the decision making process. I would encourage consensus among the council members, not only when it comes to our downtown, but with all issues coming before the town council.
With Apple continuing to grow and Microsoft locating in Maiden, we must still make effort not to overspend. There is an old saying - "Just because you have money, you don't have to spend it". Maiden has a good infrastructure, but with the population increase coming with the new houses being built, we must be careful to not get behind in our ability to deliver the services the town provides.

Another issue of concern to me is the rising cost of fire apparatus. With fire engines costing around $800,000, with a delivery time of around 1 1/2 to 2 years, we must develop a replacement plan, so as to not have to purchase several back to back. This is not only true with the fire department. Public works equipment is rising in cost at a phenomenal rate. We must remain open to other avenues in procuring equipment, such as leasing.
