I have served as a member of the Shallotte Planning Board, Board of Aldermen and 3 terms as Mayor of Shallotte. I have a thorough understanding of Town of Shallotte and its challenges and resources. As Mayor I have worked with organizations across North Carolina to promote the interests of Shallotte and all municipalities. I have served 2 terms on the North Carolina League of Municipalities, on the Cape Fear Council of Governments and, for the past 10 plus years, as chairman of the North Carolina Technical Advisory of the Grand Strand Area of Transportation ("GSATS"). I have worked well with our representatives in Raleigh and with their help have obtained $5 million in grants for the Shallotte Riverwalk and the expansion of Mulberry Park.
Shallotte, like all of Brunswick County, is experiencing rapid growth. The top issue is managing this growth and ensuring adequate infrastructure for this development.

The second issue is mitigating traffic in Shallotte--particularly on Main Street.

The third issue is to continue to provide high quality municipal services to all t he citizens of Shallotte.
Managing growth is a multi-faceted challenge. Shallotte provides sewer service, provides police and fire protection, maintains Town roads and maintains the Town parks and recreation facilities. Thus for the past few years Shallotte has anticipated the known growth by increasing the Town staffs anticipating growth and increasing the funds available to maintain Town roads. Furthermore, the Town is monitoring its available sewer capacity (currently one million gallons a day). In addition, working with GSATS and The NC Department of Transportation, the Town has received grant funds to install a traffic signal system that has worked well in other states. In addition, the Town is working with DOT to improve ingress and egress on Main Street.
Brunswick County has undertaken a study with a goal to revising how fire services are financed. Currently fire services are funded by a fire fee. Under the current system Shallotte finances over 40% of the cost of fire services from its general fund. It is essential that whatever financing system is adopted, that Shallotte is treated equitably. I have worked on this issue for the past 5 plus years and am well-versed on the alternatives and well-positioned to ensure Shallotte and its citizens are treated equitably.

As part of managing growth, the Town has developed and is expanding Mulberry Park, has built a Riverwalk and installed a kayak launch at the Riverwalk and will install a kayak launch at the Mulberry Park extension. This is a part of the effort to preserve green space and make Shallotte an attractive Town to visit and live. I have worked for the past 12 years as mayor to see that Shallotte meets and will continue to meet its potential
