I was born and raised in Astoria, and I returned to the coast in 2010 to raise my family. For the past 15 years, I have worked directly with children and families across Clatsop County- as a special educator, a preschool owner, a birth doula, and currently as a home visitor for new and expecting families. The time I have spent working and volunteering in local classrooms has given me the perspective of school staff and the challenges they face day to day. I have also been a public school parent for 11 years, with my youngest ready to enter Kindergarten this fall. I believe my roles as both an educator and the parent of school-age children positions me to act as a bridge between sides of this divide, rebuilding a system that works for all.
In order to receive state and federal funding, schools are required to comply with policies including the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504, Title IX, ADA, and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. School districts are also required to post a nondiscrimination notice that includes the names and contact information for individuals assigned to respond to inquiries related to non-discrimination policies. As a special educator, parent of female identifying children, and a queer identifying person myself, these policies are important to me on a personal level. I am committed to ensure they are upheld on behalf of all students and families in the community who may be impacted by discriminatory acts and/or practices.
Racism is unfortunately an enduring issue in Clatsop County, the city of Warrenton, and our schools. As our community continues to diversify, I will fight to ensure that anti-racist and non-discrimination policies are enacted and/or upheld. Our district also has a high proportion of low-income families and children with identified or suspected delays/disabilities. These children and families often require additional, specialized services in order to access and engage in an educational setting. I will advocate for adding/maintaining programming that provides additional resources for children and families experiencing these and other risk factors. Promoting consistent attendance also improves student performance and family engagement.
I have endorsed Bree Libertad and encourage voters yo vote for Bree instead of me. Bree and I have the same vision and goals for Warrenton School District: we want what is best for students and educators. I know that Bree will serve on the Board as a highly informed citizen in education being an educator herself. I trust in Bree to support the educators and students of Warrenton School District and hope voter of Warrenton will vote for her.
