Since 2021, the County Attorney's Office has cycled through multiple attorneys — resignations, appointments, more resignations. That instability weakens case continuity, strains relationships with law enforcement, and erodes public trust. I've spent over a decade in Utah courtrooms, argued before the Utah Supreme Court and federal court, and serve on three Utah Supreme Court committees. Cache County needs steady, experienced leadership in this office. I intend to provide it.
The County Attorney must ensure the county looks before it leaps. Before approving major developments, leaders need a clear-eyed assessment of zoning compliance, water rights, infrastructure obligations, environmental and public safety liability, and whether proper notice and due process have been followed. I'll provide thorough legal analysis before the county commits to decisions that are difficult to reverse — and I'll defend the property rights of families who've worked this land for generations.
Effective prosecution begins well before a case reaches court. I'll build a close working relationship with Sheriff Jensen and local police chiefs so the County Attorney's Office serves as a partner, not a bottleneck. That means regular coordination on investigations, joint training on evidentiary standards and constitutional requirements, and open communication so problems surface early. When officers know what a case needs to hold up in court, outcomes improve for everyone.
Fairness requires consistency and transparency. I'll establish clear prosecution guidelines so that charging decisions rest on evidence and the law — not on who you are or who you know. Early in my career, I served as a juvenile public defender and saw the justice system from every angle. That experience informs how I think about accountability. I support programs like drug court that hold people accountable while offering a genuine path forward. Justice should be firm. It should also be fair.
I'll track case resolution rates, time from filing to disposition, outcomes on serious offenses, and victim satisfaction with the process. But numbers tell only part of the story. Given the office's recent turnover, retaining qualified attorneys and maintaining manageable caseloads rank among my top priorities — because constant turnover costs taxpayers money and weakens results. I'll run a transparent office and report regularly on how public dollars are spent.
