I believe that every individual should have the autonomy to make decisions about their own body and reproductive health care. Access to safe and legal abortion is a fundamental aspect to health care and is crucial to ensuring equality and freedom. I am proud that I played a key role in codifying Roe v Wade into state law in Rhode Island before the US Supreme Court overturned it. I also played a key role in removing the state level Hyde Amendment language in Rhode Island because access without funding is not truly access.
I will continue to advocate to fund expanded access to affordable housing, healthcare, and childcare as these are major pain points for household budgets. I will also continue to advocate for better outcomes from our public schools to make sure that people are able to send their kids to public school and that those public schools are enabling each child to reach their full potential and follow their desired career path. I will also continue to support policies that empower workers and unions, which play a crucial role in advocating for fair wages and working conditions. Last year I was proud to support legislation to remove the exemption in the minimum wage statute for domestic workers.
I have been proud to support and play a key role in advancing numerous pieces of legislation related to gun safety during my time in elected office. From preventing guns on school grounds, to limiting magazine capacity, to enhancing the safe storage laws, we have covered incredible ground in Rhode Island. I will continue to advocate for passage of an assault weapons ban as well.
We have made great strides in making sure that elections are accessible with the passage of my legislation, Let RI Vote. This bill made early voting permanent, expanded opportunities for voting by mail, and also strengthened and clarified the process for voter list maintenance. I believe we also need to allow for same-day voter registration, which is currently allowed for the presidential race but not the down ballot races.
I was the lead author & sponsor of the landmark Act on Climate legislation which updated the state climate goals and provided a mechanism for enforcement. I also have introduced and gotten passed numerous pieces of legislation to advance the clean energy transition. I also have supported efforts to fund climate resiliency planning and funding.
