Law enforcement training city, state, and I was a unit Chaser in the Marines. Leadership training, both civilian and military. Multiple public speaking awards and the ability to communicate on all levels. Experience as a firefighter, foster parent, construction superintendent, life coach, and a United States (FMF) Marine . I have been blessed to experience many aspects of life from being adopted, alcoholic parents, fourteen schools in eleven years, four parent divorces and a childhood that has made me appreciate difficult situations and that service with humility is a must. I currently own an Equine Therapy program that assists veterans and first responders with the effects of PTSD. My life experiences have made me a well-rounded Leader
With age, we encounter a plethora of challenges, both physically and mentally. Either of these can make driving a hazard. I will start a county wide driver improvement program that will assist in identifying citizens that have impairments that hinder their ability to operate a motorized vehicle. I will encourage programs that will assist in ensuring they are looked after. I want an approved vendor list overseen by our office, so people wishing to get work done will have some idea of the credibility of the vendors.Sheriff approved classes (ran by volunteers) in the areas of residential security, firearm safety, neighborhood drug interdiction.Do I have all the answers NO but the answers are here and I'm listening

I do not know enough about current agency policy to make a comment on this particular question, as it is asked. However, I do realize that mental illness training must start in-house first, and our officers must feel free to seek mental health assistance without fear of reprisal. I will have a policy stating such within the first 30 days of my administration. Because I work so closely with mental health professionals currently, I feel we will be able to greatly increase our services in this often overlooked and very critical community issue. This program will be volunteer as well.

As a candidate for this office for the last four years, I have found that most people have no idea who the sheriff is, outside of the inner circle. I believe this question is based on perception and can be answered differently depending on the individual. However, I will say, as of recently, the department has gone to great lengths to try to get out and interact with the people. This is something I am glad to see. As your sheriff, I will try to be in the public as much as possible and encourage the deputies to do so as well. I believe positive interaction builds trust and communication. I want to get past the, "us and them", and back to we, the people. I want to be "your" Sheriff.

Education AA degree Police Technology, BA degree Criminal Justice Administration

I am a 34-year veteran of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Through those years I have worked my way through the ranks to the current position of Undersheriff. I hold an Associate degree in Police Technology and a Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice Administration. I am also a graduate of the Saint Leo University Criminal Justice Administration program and the Florida Sheriffs Association Command Office Program. I have received thousands of hours of additional training throughout my career related to Law Enforcement functions. I have investigated and led thousands of investigations including everything from minor infractions to homicides. I was also on the agency SWAT team for sixteen years and worked my way up to team commander.
Sumter County is one of the Safest Counties within the State of Florida with a very low violent crime rate. Narcotic related issues are a problem throughout the United States and as Sheriff I will continue to have a very strong approach to locking up drug dealers that poison our society. I will also continue to educate the communities in regards to scams as they are prevalent now more than ever. I believe educating the public is one way to help shut down these scammers that prey on vulnerable citizens within our community. One of the number one complaints I get, although it is not related to violent crimes is traffic issues such as speed. I will continue to grow our traffic unit to keep up with the growth in Sumter County.

As Undersheriff, I saw an increasing need within the county to provide assistance to those who suffer from some type of mental distress, whether it be dementia, depression or anything else. We as an agency must be prepared. I have required that all deputies, to include Corrections deputies attend (CIT) Crisis Intervention Training. I have also gone a step further and hired civilian personnel that have advanced training requirements in this specialized area. These civilians work on shift alongside Deputies and provide support once the scene is secure. They provide valuable resources for those in need. I also created Safe Sumter which is a number of non-traditional programs that provide safety programs to the community at no cost.

As your Undersheriff, I believe transparency is key to building bonds with the community. Every Deputy Sheriff in Sumter County to include Detention Deputies are equipped with a body worn camera. I have also gone one step further, as we are in the process of installing in car cameras to each patrol unit some of which have already been installed in specialty units such as the DUI units. I have also implemented district commander concept in which a lieutenant is assigned to all districts as designated within the county. This lieutenant is the community liaison and is tasked with organizing community meetings open to the public so that we can discuss community concerns. We also have a strong community outreach program.
I am a lifelong resident of Sumter County, I have raised my family here and dedicated my entire adult life to serving the citizens of Sumter County. I am involved in my community and continually strive to keep Sumter a safe county for families and individuals to live, work and play. It is truly a county that I love and my roots are deep here.
