(Dem)
What do you see as the greatest challenges facing Maine right now?
How will you encourage greater civic engagement among your constituents?
What will you do to address the need for affordable housing?
Is there anything else you'd like voters to know about you?
Our state faces a housing crisis, a child care crisis, and a skilled workforce crisis. We do not have enough housing which is driving up the costs. We have underpaid child care workers. There are too few in the field. And the cost of child care is already too high. It is leaving parents with fewer options and greater expense. As more of our workforce reaches retirement age, we are losing professionals in the trades. It is causing issues in the construction industry (also leading to the increased costs to build housing) and it means good paying jobs are going unfilled.
I plan to provide ample opportunity for engagement with constituents via social media and in-person "coffee hours" which is something I offered when I previously served in the legislature.
We need to ensure we can maintain historic investment in affordable housing. Much of the investment resulted from unprecedented federal funding. If we revert back to the funding levels before this federal infusion, the housing pipeline will diminish significantly and we will miss our annual production targets. We need to identify a sustainable revenue source to boost housing funding for the next decade.
I was born and raised in Biddeford. My memere and pepere moved from Packington, Quebec in 1964 to work in the textile mills. They brought my then infant dad with them. He would later work in the textile mills as well. I am proud of my Franco-American heritage and the ways in which it shaped Biddeford. I learned from a young age the value of hard work and making sure those who labor get their due. As a legislator, I have fought for workers. Making sure the playing field is level between working people and management. Most importantly, I have championed efforts to provide a wage that families can actually live on. I'll stand up for these values if re-elected.
