40 states and D.C. have expanded Medicaid. As with most other vital stats, like education, crime, violent crime, healthcare, etc, South Carolina is in the worst ten. Expanding Medicaid has been proven over and over to not only improve access to healthcare, but to lower healthcare costs for both the government and individuals. Many people do not go to doctors until their ailments are detrimental, as they cannot afford to incur bills. These urgent bills are frequently astronomically higher than a preventive bill. In 2021, Governor McMaster said, “The way to good health is good employment, good education.” I agree, although I believe we need to do more as legislators to make sure our constituents are able to access healthcare.
As we improve resources, we should see jobs improve as well. For example, by expanding Medicaid, we will see preventive care-related jobs enter the market. We struggle to find qualified workers in our state, as we do not provide resources for students to obtain education . This year, we funded an initiative for quantum supercomputing that should give students knowledge that will assist them in finding jobs.
Climate change has been under attack by people who want to deny the science right in front of them. Climate change is a real and present threat that will change the world for the worst if we do not tackle it now. We have to take it seriously and take steps to address it; that starts with making sure municipalities have the resources they need to protect their citizens. I am grateful for President Biden’s Federal Infrastructure Bill that will provide nearly $1 billion dollars to South Carolina to invest in our roads and bridges and protect communities from sea level rise and flooding. The state needs to continue to provide resources to these communities to protect residents from flooding and sea level rise.
Librarians, educators, and parents should determine what books appear in libraries, not politicians. We must allow educators to do their jobs without political interference.

I have fully supported and advocated for Medicaid expansion for the last decade. Just this year I offered amendments to expand Medicaid. Too many working adults in South Carolina are without coverage and this could be alleviated by expanding Medicaid like many other states across the United States.
As a father of two teenagers, I'm motivated to ensure that our next generation has the opportunity to have high paying employment opportunities when they finish school. We must identify ways to attract business and industry to all corners of our state, including our rural areas. Childcare and transportation continue to be major barriers for folks all across our state and we must make sure that state agencies efficiently work with businesses that need employees and constituents looking for work. Our technical schools will always play a vital role in training our workforce and we must give them the resources to be successful. Most importantly, improving public education in our state is the key that will unlock employment prosperity.
I have an overall A score on environmental issues in South Carolina. Addressing environmental issues require comprehensive, long-term strategies that follow science-based recommendations. As rising sea levels threaten our coast, we must support efforts to make our communities more resilient.
Public schools are receiving more scrutiny than ever before. Teachers and librarians often find themselves in the crosshairs of national organizations looking to capitalize off of criticism and condemnation. School boards, administrators and parents must work together with clear lines of communication to make sure that our students have access to age appropriate material that will foster their education and challenge them to excel in their studies.
