As your County Engineer, my job is to administer all aspects of design, construction and maintenance of our 353 miles of local roads and 374 bridges. With help from my staff, our goal is to provide the safest and most efficient roadway system possible. Unfortunately, maintaining this system is extremely difficult, due to inadequate funding that has not been adjusted regularly for inflation. Gaps in funding increases (some up to 14 years) have resulted in deteriorating infrastructure and a backlog of projects. While our bridges are in good condition overall, our roadways currently need the most attention. Therefore, I plan to continue dedicating more revenue to upgrading our roadways. To help prioritize our needs, I implemented a pavement management system almost seven (7) years ago. This database tracks the age and condition of each section of roadway and enables us to manage the maintenance of our county roads on both a micro and macro level, therefore saving taxpayers money.
