I believe Commissioners must understand the county’s evolving economic condition. We need to intentionally engage in economic development programs and do so through the Allen Economic Development Group and Port Authority of Allen County. Tax abatement is an incentive tool we can grant to a new or expanding business. Another economic stimulator is sales tax. At a rate of 6.85%, only 19 counties in Ohio have a lower sales tax rate. Our infrastructure attracts new business, and Commissioners have a role with programs such as sanitary sewer, water, roads and bridges, building, drainage, and solid waste. Other development tools we use include Ohio Means Jobs for workforce development, and County Land Bank creating developable properties.
