For too long, prices for housing, healthcare and basic needs have been rising and wages aren’t keeping up. I believe everyone deserves food, housing, medicine, and education. I will fight to raise minimum wage and put robust consumer protections in place. Protections against corporate price gouging and predatory rental property practices. I will support programs that make it easier to buy a single family home to live in and harder to buy it as an investment. We must use every tool available to negotiate lower prescription drug prices for everyone in the state. I will lead the charge to change the unconstitutional way we fund public education, because supporting our kids should not feel like punishment for homeowners.
I support ranked choice voting at all levels of elections. I support increased early voting locations and hours, free postage on absentee mail ballots and additional forms of ID accepted at polling places.
We need to invest in high speed passenger trains to connect Cleveland with a major East/West line between Chicago and New York, and also within the state, running from Cincinnati to Columbus to Cleveland. Additionally, supporting and incentivizing growth in sustainable energy will position Ohio to be the home to emerging industries.
Every school system from the smallest rural township to the wealthiest suburb should provide the same excellent education to its students. Right now, our funding system is broken. Voters can approve or deny levies and bonds for their city schools, which too often pits homeowners against children. It should never come down to a decision of whether a senior on a fixed income can shoulder the burden of additional property taxes or if kids should be in trailers or buildings with mold. The solution must come from the state level to prioritize education and ensure the funding is fair. Higher Education must also be affordable, and graduates who are struggling with enormous student debt need relief.
In most cases, people who live in a locality are the best judges of what their community needs. However, if any local government passes a law that unfairly targets or discriminates against a group of people, the state should make every effort to protect every citizen equally. Ohio has a backlog of desperately needed infrastructure improvement projects, and most of these span across city lines. The state government should be able to coordinate and support these larger projects to get more competitive bids as well as ensuring all work is on schedule.
Healthcare is a human right. There is no excuse to allow people to suffer from treatable conditions simply because they can't afford the visit to the doctor or to buy their medication. We must takes steps within the state to make quality healthcare more affordable and also take advantage of every federal initiative to reduce costs.
Lake Erie is one of our greatest resources. We must take steps to protect it from chemicals and agricultural run off, and prevent pipelines from siphoning off fresh water. I will not allow our public forest area to be sold off to private owners, and will make sure we continue to fund appropriate maintenance for these parks. I want to heavily invest in sustainable energy, not only to reduce emissions, but to create the modern jobs Ohio needs to propel us to the future.
Numerous laws already exist to protect job applicants, people seeking housing, education or resources from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. Some of these laws may need to be amended to include gender identity, sexuality, age, income level, veteran status or other factors. Any proposed law that singles out a specific group or type of person should be considered with the utmost caution against discrimination.
