Position/philosophy statement I have 35 years experience working in public education. I held every position from a teacher's assistant to the district office. I provide a voice of experience and offer a voice for common sense in public education.

I have a total of 35 years working in public education. I have worked in nearly every position within a public school. I have worked as a teacher's assistant, a classroom teacher, a school counselor, an assistant principal, a principal, and a special education director at the district level. I am currently working as a school counselor at a high school in South Carolina. I hold a master's degree in school counseling from UNCP, a master's degree in school administration from East Carolina University, and a doctorate degree in education leadership from NC State University.
A school board member's most important responsibility is to author and pass school board policies that provide the best educational opportunities for all students. It is a board member's responsibility is to do his/her best for every student, do what is right for every student, and to treat everyone with dignity, fairness, consistency.
Our needs are not unlike the needs of all districts in North Carolina. In my opinion, our top needs are the recruitment, and retention of highly qualified teachers, reduced class size at all school levels, and keeping up with advancing technology. My priority has always been "people over stuff." People teach kids, not programs, curriculum, or technology. With that said, my priority will always be recruitment and retention of highly qualified teachers, and reducing class size. As we look at available funding from state and local funding, how can we maximize those funds to support hiring and retaining highly qualified teachers.
We will have to look at how we can improve in this area in four ways. First, how aggressive are we with forming partnerships with colleges of education within the region and nation. Second, how of can we improve policies that reduce noninstructional duties placed on teachers. Third, how can we create relationships with local services such as housing, utility services, automotive dealers, child care providers, and retailors to provide incentives for new teachers moving to our district. Finally, how can we maximize state and local finding to provide financial incentives for newly hired teachers.
I served as a principal of two different elementary schools. One elementary school had a pre-k program and one did not have a pre- k program. In the school that had a pre-k program, student preparedness to enter kindergarten was exponentially higher than in the school without a pre-k program. Kindergarten students who have completed pre-k programs are more successful in academics and social adjustment than students who have not participated in pre-k programs.
I offer the citizens of Richmond County leadership built from experience. I have worked in public education for 35 years holding nearly all positions in public schools from teacher's assistant to central office special education director. School board actions and decisions must put children first and provide the best opportunity for a high quality education for all students. I respectfully ask for your support in Richmond County on March 3, 2026.
