NEWTON-CONOVER SCHOOLS BOARD OF EDUCATION NEWTON DISTRICT {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

The Newton-Conover City School System is governed by a six-member Board of Education that sets policy and establishes guidelines for school operations.  Board members are elected citywide in partisan elections, with three representatives coming from the City of Newton and three from the City of Conover.  The Board elects the chairman and vice-chairman.At Newton-Conover, the board members decisions affected approximately 3,000 students in eight schools during the school year.  Decisions made by local boards of education affect communities, families, and children.  Today s children in public school classrooms will be tomorrow s leaders.  Local Boards of Education literally have the future in their Collective hands.Board members are committed to setting the highest possible standards for the school system and our students.  They spend many hours reviewing policies, establishing goals, studying issues, attending meetings, and determining budgets.  There are four key roles for a board member:  setting a vision for education in the local community; establishing a structure for everyday operations; developing a comprehensive accountability system for administrators, teachers, and students; and advocating for students and public schools.The superintendent, appointed by the Board, is responsible for the school system s administration.

I have served on the Newton-Conover Board of Education for 12 years. During this time, Newton-Conover City Schools has achieved the rank of the #1 school district in Catawba County. All schools have a letter grade of A, B, or C. Newton-Conover is 1 of 12 districts out 115 to achieve this accomplishment two years in a row. Newton-Conover is ranked 5th best place to teach in North Carolina and 5th with the best teachers in North Carolina.
Provide a safe and secure learning environment for students, while ensuring staff are preparing students to be career or college ready.
Support for students who require additional services to address learning loss. We are constantly looking internally to do more with less as it relates to allotted funding.
We must continue to support our beginning teachers while balancing the needs of our veteran staff. Telling our story and celebrating the successes of our district should always be used to attract and retain qualified talent.
NC Pre-K provides an important on-ramp for a student's educational career. Having the Pre-K early support also helps to identify developmental delays that can be addressed, resulting in less future learning loss.
I have been in public service for 38 years. I believe that everyone has a calling and the ability to serve mankind.
Position/philosophy statement Supporting common sense education.

I am the only candidate for this office that has experience in budgeting and managing academic programs. Prior to my career change in education, I spent time working within international environments leading hundreds of employees and upwards of $30M budgets. Our Board of Education needs more real-world leadership that brings common sense to the table.
