Delaware City Schools faces two pressing challenges: maintaining academic excellence amid rapid enrollment growth while caring for aging buildings and managing decreased state and federal funding. As funding burdens shift more heavily onto local taxpayers, we must strengthen transparency and long-range financial planning. With community input, I will advocate for proactive communication, data-driven decisions, and smart investments that protect classroom quality, facilities, and trust.
My priorities are to strengthen academic supports, increase transparency in budgeting and board operations, and ensure financial decisions reflect community input and student needs. I will advocate for clear public reporting, SMART goals with guardrails, and regular progress updates so residents can see where funds go and how they impact learning. By aligning spending with district priorities and maintaining fiscal discipline, we can protect classroom quality and community trust even in tight funding years.
School board members set policy, hire and evaluate the superintendent, and ensure that district resources align with student and community needs. I have completed School Board School and bring nearly three decades of experience as an educator, and parent of students who have attended Delaware City Schools. This background gives me a strong understanding of classroom realities, district operations, and community expectations. I’m prepared to govern with transparency, collaboration, and a steadfast focus on student success.
Community input is key, especially as Superintendent Pomeroy continues Mission: Delaware, which includes meeting directly with parents and families. Continuing to involve the community in decisions builds trust and ensures that district actions reflect shared priorities. I will stay visible and accessible through open communication, clear board updates, and opportunities for feedback so families, staff, and taxpayers feel informed, respected, and represented.
Through various leadership roles as an educator and active community member, I’ve learned the importance of listening with an open mind and keeping students at the center of every decision. Disagreement is natural, but respect and collaboration lead to the best outcomes. I will approach differing perspectives by focusing on shared goals, using data and dialogue to guide decisions that strengthen trust and advance student success.

School funding changes on a state and federal level will have a tremendous impact on our districts now and moving forward. I will continue to provide testimony in session at the Statehouse to ensure elected officials know we are not going to take these changes laying down. I will continue to work with our Treasurer/CFO and Superintendent to come up with ways to save and creative ways to ensure district needs are met. I will also continue to educate the community (as much as current legislation will allow) on how school funding works so they too are able to advocate for our specific needs.
My primary goal is to work on creative solutions to ensure we are able to fund our school in the next 3-5 years while we continue to pivot as legislation changes continue to happen. It is my job to carry this burden so our staff isn't feeling the pressure of how we will fund our schools.
A school board member's role is to govern the district by determining the budget, establishing policies and goals and to be the liaison between the school district and community.
The role of the school board is to also hire and evaluate the Superintendent and Treasurer/CFO. I have deep ties to the community and in numerous directions so it is easy for me to find a connection, regardless what area of the community we are focusing on. I pride myself in maintaining a nonpartisan viewpoint when decision-making for the district to ensure all decisions are made without bias and favoritism.
I will continue to listen to the community and share that information with my fellow board members. Sometimes that listening may involve bringing groups or individuals into a board meeting to give a presentation so others can learn from their sharing. I will continue to attend community events, be present and approachable out in the community, and respond to emails sent by individuals. I have been invited to different meetings, to come see how things are working, or conditions of particular schools over the last 4 years and I make a point to attend those events because I can gather more information seeing things in person versus just hearing about them.
I am a great listener and need to hear different viewpoints before making decisions. This builds trust with our stakeholders and with that trust comes respect. Respect for one another allows us to collectively work together to problem solve and come up with solutions that may not be easy for each stakeholder, but are in the best we can come up with at the time with the resources we have. We are in a very different time in this state so working together for a common goal is the only way to ensure we're able to complete tasks.
