Biographical Information

1. What skills, knowledge, and experience do you have to help you be an effective Township Supervisor?

2. Why are you running for Township Supervisor?

3. Fluoridation in public water supplies has been studied by many agencies over many years. In Oct 2024, a federal court ruled that fluoride exposure poses a hazard to human health and ordered the EPA to respond. In Pennsylvania, decisions about fluoride in the water supplies are assigned to local government. What are your thoughts about the best way to manage this at the local level?

Education, Experience BS from Moravian College
As a retired Financial Advisor and owner of my own business, I will bring fiscally responsible thinking to the role. I advocated for my clients to use their money wisely and to save for their future. I have held leadership rolls in various organizations, most currently, the Chairman of the Berks County 4-H Program Development Committee. This leadership experience has allowed me to obtain information and make informed decisions from that information.
I believe that as a township we need to be fiscally responsible and plan for the future of our township. Our school district has produced data showing that our youth population is shrinking. This means that our population is aging and we must prepare for a future where our older community members are not encumbered with providing support for our township through extreme taxation. I bring common sense and integrity and am looking for your support. I am not running to promote any specific project or because I am strongly in favor of or opposed to things happening in our community.
On the local level, we will need to look at the science of this issue. Currently, the ADA recommends fluoridation of our water supplies for the prevention of tooth decay. This recommendation is based on years of scientific study and sound evidence. A judge has ruled that fluoride in our water can lead to cognitive decline and ordered the EPA to investigate although no conclusive evidence for the change in fluoridation has been provided. Until I would see scientific evidence that the judges ruling has support, I would follow the ADA's recommendation.

I am a regular attendee at our meetings and have participated in many discussions concerning Township matters. I have served on an important Authority for over 16 yrs, where we delivered a sewer system ahead of time and under budget.
The Township is surrounded by encroaching development, some of it would disrupt the quality of life so severely that it would alter our essential lifestyle to a degree where it requires careful attention to its ultimate effect on all of us. This must be balanced with the need to run the Township with responsible fiscal decisions. I am confident that I can work effectively with our current Supervisors to those ends. Our ecology is unique and fragile. I share their concern to protect it. With that,I am asking for your support in seeking this office.
I would support a serious discussion on resident interest in it.
Education, Experience I graduated from Gettysburg College, earned a graduate degree in Historic Preservation at the University of Vermont, and completed a PhD in American history at Lehigh University. I am working to become a certified community planner, and took the course in Community Planning, at Alvernia in 2024.
Qualifications Chairman and founder of the Maxatawny Historic Commission. Chairman of the Maxatawny Planning Commission. I organized the historic commission in 2012. As a planning commission member I have reviewed every development project in Maxatawny for the past four years, gaining years of experience working with engineers, builders, and attorneys, to make sure their plans follow our township’s ordinances. I have sought improvements in many development proposals by making useful recommendations for the Supervisors, and I have made important contributions to updated and new ordinances.
To protect Maxatawny’s future we need a new vision, that meets the current and future needs of our residents and ensures fiscal responsibility and accountability to tax payers. I am attending meetings sponsored by the county and state, designed to assist communities like ours to understand both the needs of our citizens and the opportunities to encourage growth. There is a lot to learn, but the future depends on seizing opportunity and meeting the needs that best benefit our residents. As supervisor, I will help plan a better future for Maxatawny, laid out in a new comprehensive plan, that features sustainable development ideas, with sound financial planning. I will exhaust all means to hold the line on taxes.
Most Maxatawny residents draw their water from their own private wells and there is no fluoride in the community’s aquifer. The Maxatawny Municipal Authority provides public drinking water to approximately 152 homes and businesses in Bowers and they do not add fluoride to the water. Kutztown Borough provides public water to approximately sixty-four of our residential customers and about five business customers and has not been adding fluoride. I am not seeing a fluoride issue in Maxatawny Township at this time.
