Wyomissing Area School District and Kutztown University
Qualifications
Current School Board Director currently serving 8th year
I am currently serving my second term as a WASD School Director. During this time, I have attended numerous board meetings involving critical issues involving the District. Such issues being: Finances, Facilities, Safety Protocols, Personnel and Curriculum.
Prior to 2017, I attended numerous school board meetings and felt that the then board was not being fiscally responsible, being fully transparent or making sound decisions as to the educational needs of our students. Since then, I have been elected to two terms as School Board Director. During that time, I worked diligently with both current and past boards and administrations to change these issues. I am seeking a third term to ensure the changes that I fought for continue.
I feel that the top 3 challenges facing school boards today are funding, teacher shortages and behavioral issues. To deal with these issues, I feel that the School Board will need to work with the administration to secure more funding through advocacy and grants, invest in teacher recruitment and retention programs, and implement stronger behavioral support systems to create a more positive and effective learning experience.
Yes, I do believe that Districts should assist with preparing our students with life skills such as accounting, civics, and home economics. However, I do feel in order for our students to be successful with all life skills, parental support at home is necessary for students to excel.
Emerging technology has a time and place. We must be careful how much technology is utilized in our classrooms, so that our students do not lose the ability to use critical thinking to solve problems for themselves. We will need to give our students a basic understanding of these technologies, however our primary responsibility is teaching them to problem solve for themselves.
