I am a former SV school board member, having served 16 years as either Vice President or President. Throughout those years, I attended countless conferences, seminars and workshops; served on all standing board committees at various times; negotiated staff contracts; and served as SV's representative on the BCTC Board.
I am concerned with the current climate of our school district and want to be part of the solution to move Schuylkill Valley forward to be the best we can be. We need to focus on academics; provide a safe and secure environment; and encourage a collaborative effort between our professional staff and administration. Effective communication and mutual respect between all stakeholders involved is key to a successful school district.
Public education in general is facing many challenges. Providing all students with the skills needed to succeed is the top challenge and should be our primary focus. Balancing educational needs with available funding has always been a challenge, and at times that means being creative with the resources available without short-changing our students. And parents, students and staff want assurances they are in a safe environment to focus on learning and not on outside influences of our society.
A well-rounded graduate should be the goal of every school district, and that includes preparing students with life skills needed to become self-reliant. There are various ways to accomplish this - supplemental lessons within the normal areas of study, or by a stand-alone class required for graduation, perhaps using times normally set aside for study halls.
Education should challenge students to learn and possess critical thinking skills, and their use of technology, such as A-I, is a tool to enhance learning, not replace it. A-I can provide the ability to help teachers in student evaluations through data and pinpoint areas of instruction that need improvement. Technology is ever evolving and we need to stay current with the benefits, and challenges, that will no doubt occur.
