Town Meeting is Brookline s Legislative arm of government. It consists of 255 elected Town Meeting Members plus the members of the Select Board, and any state representative or state senator who resides in Brookline. In addition, the Town Moderator, who presides over Town Meeting, and the elected Town Clerk, who acts as secretary, are voting members. The 255 membersare elected by precinct, with 15 members elected from each of the Town s seventeen precincts. The members are elected for staggered, 3-year terms so that 5 members are elected from each precinct each year in the May annual town election. Depending on vacancies some precincts will have more members to be elected.Town Meeting is responsible for passing a balanced annual town budget and enacts all town by-laws. An Annual Town Meeting is held in the spring to enact the following year s budget, plus whatever other matters are placed on the Town Meeting Warrant, either by the Select Board or by citizen petition. The Annual Town Meeting is usually held the last week in May or the first week in June. As a TMM, I am responsible for representing Precinct 4 and advocating for thoughtful solutions to the town’s problems. To this end, I will encourage rational planning to create new affordable housing units near transit, while improving the quality of existing affordable units in town. I will also encourage reducing the town’s carbon footprint by updating its bicycle network, promoting composting, and incentivizing the use of renewable energy.

Another component of my job is the communication of critical issues to my precinct, and serving as the voice of my precinct in larger townwide discussions. To achieve this, I have spoken out at public meetings regarding many issues, such as the MBTA-CA rezoning and the Pierce School reconstruction.

My main responsibilities as TMM in Precinct 4 are to be an accessible and diligent representative my neighborhood and work to build consensus with the other 254 TMMs to make decisions that secure the best future for all that live in our town. I can use my 25 years of Brookline perspective and personal experience to inform my decisions but I have to work hard to learn the perspective of others who, in our diverse neighborhood, offer a wide variety of lived experience. Throughout the year I also try to participate any important hearings and proposals. And then I show up. I have never missed a session or even a single vote at TM in over 20 years. I ask myself, “Will my vote make a better, more equitable Brookline?”
