Brookline Town Meeting - Pct 02 {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

Town Meeting is Brookline s Legislative arm of government. It consists of 255 elected Town Meeting Members plus the members of the Select Board, and any state representative or state senator who resides in Brookline. In addition, the Town Moderator, who presides over Town Meeting, and the elected Town Clerk, who acts as secretary, are voting members. The 255 membersare elected by precinct, with 15 members elected from each of the Town s seventeen precincts. The members are elected for staggered, 3-year terms so that 5 members are elected from each precinct each year in the May annual town election. Depending on vacancies some precincts will have more members to be elected.Town Meeting is responsible for passing a balanced annual town budget and enacts all town by-laws. An Annual Town Meeting is held in the spring to enact the following year s budget, plus whatever other matters are placed on the Town Meeting Warrant, either by the Select Board or by citizen petition. The Annual Town Meeting is usually held the last week in May or the first week in June. A Special Town Meeting is held each fall, usually in November, to deal with any budget changes, zoning by-law amendments or other matters placed on the warrant. I have lived on Amory Street for over 30 years with my wife Ellen. Our two children attended Brookline schools and are BHS graduates. I am running for reelection to Town Meeting because I have been active in local politics for several years and feel my experience helps me understand the issues that come before Town Meeting. A Town Meeting Member belongs to the Town legislature and our primary function is to consider By Laws presented by Petitioners and to vote on the Town Budget at the Annual (Spring) Town Meeting.
Town Meeting Members need to be informed about issues before the Town generally and particularly must keep up with what is happening in the precinct. I expect development proposals will be the most visible precinct topic over the next few years as we go through the Town Comprehensive Planning process. School funding is a topic that is important to Precinct 2 and the Town. I will continue to support our schools. A Town Meeting Member should be a resource for neighbors which is something I think can help make local government less mysterious. Some local voices are advocating to change the Brookline Charter from a Town to City form. There is a committee preparing a neutral report. How different would local government be if we change?

~ 25 year resident on Copley Street. 45+ year career in government and planning, including state and municipal government; affordable housing, non-profit and commercial development. Most recently Commissioner for the state agency responsible for all capital planning, projects and real estate for all the state agencies; retired last fall. Two graduates of the excellent BPS. With my husband Ben Whipple, we remain engaged with the BHS through our support of the Whipple Writing Fellowship. Past President and current board member of Brookline Arts Center. Endorsed by Brookline for Every, Brookline PAX.
The issue that motivated me to run in 2022 is development and zoning. Recent changes in State laws governing zoning mean that significant zoning change in at least some parts of our Town were very likely. I ended up playing a significant role in the ultimate outcome of the MBTA CA zoning measures. I believe I was influential in achieving a balanced outcome - one that met the spirit as well as the letter of state law, but balanced that with provisions that achieved important goals for our Coolidge Corner neighborhood and local businesses. I hope to continue to work on the issues around housing and development, and to provide that balanced perspective.

I am a Clinical Social Worker, Community Activist, Change Agent, and Mother who works toward making equitable changes for Brookline’s most underserved communities. I volunteer to serve on various boards and commissions in Brookline in order to provide the needed representation to ensure that the BIPOC community has a seat at the table. I work to advance racial justice and equity in order to raise the voices of those who are struggling in the Brookline community to ensure they are reflected in the decisions and direction of the Town. A lot of my focus is on the BHA community, the place I call home along with many of the most underserved people in Brookline.
As a Town Meeting Member, it is my priority to enhance community engagement, particularly within the BIPOC and low-income community, where residents are often overlooked or rendered invisible. I strongly believe in the importance of inclusivity and representation, and I am dedicated to ensuring that the voices and concerns of the P2 community are not only heard but also given the attention they deserved in town meeting. P2 has a significant population consisting of renters and it's crucial that their voices are proportionately represented. I also welcome P2 residents to call me with their concerns as I believe in a community centered approach.

I am native to the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts and have lived in Brookline for twenty years. My wife Susan and I are the proud parents of our Brookline High Junior Emily. I work in a management capacity for the Digital department of a large health system. I have been a Town Meeting Member in Precinct 2 for two years. In my spare time, you can typically find me at Amory Park with my dog Hansen, enjoying skiing in New Hampshire in the winter and tennis and golf in the summer.
Having served a two-year term as a Town Meeting Member I have learned there are several important responsibilities that a TMM must commit to the citizens they represent. Primary among them is that when a TMM votes, they represent their precinct, not their own impression of the perceived importance or validity of a particular warrant article. To that end, the Town Meeting Members of Precinct 2 have been very good about hosting Precinct 2 meetings prior to the Town Meeting for citizens to share their perspectives on the slate of articles to be reviewed at the Town Meeting. I commit to attending these sessions, listening, and representing the community's view in my votes at Town Meeting.

I moved to Brookline in fifth grade, and graduated Brookline High school in 2018. Since more people in Brookline rent their homes than own them, I want to help create Town policies around housing development so they reflect the need for more modest rental units near transit. I also think that Brookline needs more commercial and mixed use development to increase its revenues and increase the vibrancy of its commercial areas.
It’s important to me that I listen to all the concerns of the people who live in Precinct 2. I am interested in working with other Town Meeting Members to set up regular gatherings to hear from everyone.

I am running for Town Meeting because I feel drawn to ask for a seat at the table where important decisions regarding my community get made. I enjoy serving and helping people. I would like the opportunity to represent my neighbors who also care deeply and want what’s best for Brookline to flourish. I enjoy finding solutions to problems and seeing people come together for the greater good. Personal interests are in affordable housing, sustainability, and community mental health initiatives.

I became involved in advocating for more housing in Brookline about 5 years ago, when I understood that more housing near transit was a central solution to many of my concerns: racial equity, climate change and economic development. Since then, I have learned how to listen to concerns about change to our daily landscape that need to be understood if we are to craft solutions to the problems, both ethical and practical, that have evolved from our past land use practices. And, since 84% of our Town's revenue comes from property taxes, I hope to pay careful attention to how we spend that money while also finding ways to increase our tax base.
I love to explore innovative solutions to problems. Which means I hope to create ways of hearing about and understanding my constituents' concerns. Along with some of my current town meeting members, I have been exploring ways we can increase opportunities to interact with all Precinct 2 constituents, so we are always listening to and responding to their issues.
