Wisconsin Legislative BranchWisconsin’s legislature makes state laws. The legislature has two houses: the Wisconsin Senate and the Wisconsin Assembly. Proposed laws (bills) can originate from either the state senate or assembly. Both houses must approve the bill before it is passed on to the governor for signature or veto. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds majority vote in each house. The legislature controls the spending of state funds through appropriation.Wisconsin AssemblyThe Wisconsin Assembly has ninety-nine representatives. Voters elect representatives to represent their assembly district for a two-year term. Passing legislation to guarantee access to reproductive healthcare, including, but not limited to safe and legal abortion, invetro fertilization, and birth control. As a birthing parent who has navigated the need for reproductive healthcare when uninsured, pre- and post-natal care, and witnessed the affects of the lack of abortion access for those close to me I bring an informed perspective on these issues. Protecting the right to free and fair elections and expanding access to voting in areas that have been adversely affected by limits on funding, etc. The access to voting locations in my area has been limited over the last several years. This, along with the need for my elderly parents and other family members to take advantage of vote-by-mail has brought these issues very close to home for me.
While there are numerous housing related issues, the most pressing in the current economy seems to be a lack of safe and affordable housing for sale, especially at a cost that would allow first-time homebuyers to enter into the market. I would be very supportive of any policies or other measures that could help close the cost gap, whether that be additional subsidies that could be offered through lenders, incentives to sellers, or dis-incentives that would prevent private equity firms from purchasing residential properties.
I believe we should explore removing redistricting from the legislature and moving to a non-partisan, independent redistricting process.
I would support the continued investment in technologies that move us away from fossil fuels, measures that regulate and impose fines on industries that continue to pollute our water ways, and would be extremely interested to investigate any initiatives that could help Wisconsin municipalities and tourism thrive in a sustainable way.
I believe that it's not revolutionary to say that our schools should be fully staffed and funded. Once that can be achieved, programs, curriculum, and scheduling should be created with input from teaching staff and collaboration to ensure the best outcomes for all students.
