I am running to bring reasonable, common–sense policies to our state capitol. Reproductive freedom and healthcare are key priorities, as are improving water quality, increasing support for K-12 and higher education, and passing policies to grow our economy, foster innovation, and improve public safety. I support restoring critical union rights, and protecting voting rights and making it easier for all eligible voters to cast their ballot. We should want to attract talent in Wisconsin, so investing in our world-class UW System and technical colleges, as well as providing targeted tax relief and public-private partnerships will help bring young people to Wisconsin and bolster our state’s economy.
Housing is a concern in Wisconsin and across the nation. For too long, we didn’t build enough new housing, and we now have a shortage. Couple that with the fact that home prices are high, interest rates are high, and rent prices are high, and you have a serious issue in the housing market, where people cannot afford to buy homes and people who would otherwise sell are feeling stuck. We need to incentivize building of new homes, of all types: single family, multi-family, affordable housing, senior housing, student housing, etc. Reducing the housing shortage is one solution, but also providing more support for first-time homebuyers, and removing pre-emption laws on local housing policies would help restore local control and allow cities to better manage their housing situation.
For too long, Wisconsin’s legislature has not done enough to invest in healthcare equity and to expand access. I will vote to repeal the 1849 abortion ban, codify abortion rights, as well as a statutory right to contraception, IVF, and to expand healthcare access and reproductive freedom in Wisconsin. Women and doctors should not have to worry about their health or livelihood being threatened by extreme abortion bans. I will vote to finally expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, as well as to extend Medicaid postpartum healthcare coverage to 12 months, rather than the current 60 days. Wisconsin is one of two states that has not adopted this, and one of only 10 states to not expand Medicaid under the ACA.
Wisconsin currently has a record budget surplus, and should invest some of this historic surplus into our public schools. Many of our students are having issues with reading at grade level, and many of our youth are dealing with mental health challenges. I support additional investment in public schools, including mental health support and increasing special education reimbursement to ensure that all students have the resources and support they need.
While I am grateful for the new fairer maps that Wisconsin has in place for the 2024 elections, I fully support a new, nonpartisan redistricting process, to be implemented before the next redistricting cycle in 2031. Something similar to Michigan’s redistricting process could potentially work, but I would want any process to not result in a partisan gerrymander for either party. Wisconsin is a purple state, and the legislature should be competitive and proportional.
