As an author WI Economic Justice Bill of Rights, my priority has been to build a multiracial, multifaith and multigenerational democracy that ensures economic security, protects freedoms for all peoplem In order to work towards this vision for Wisconsin, we must make investments in people and not profits. As a single mom, community organizer and service industry worker, my working class lived and living experiences motivates me to author legislation that centers the people closest to the societal issue because they often know most about the solutions. This past session we focused on building a strong care economy, protecting reproductive freedom and fighting for fully funded public education through an equity lens. As a member of the minority party, passing legislation is often obstructed, but we organized coalitions to advocate for comprehensive paid family and medical leave, the Reproductive Freedom Act, and a budget that would center our kids and their public education.
One way to curb a growing housing crisis is to ensure that people, especially renters, can stay in their homes. We can do this with rent control. We need to repeal the state law that doesn't include a cap on rent increases and pass rent control policies that also include tenant's rights. I authored legislation that was part of the Tenant Protection Package that includes right to counsel, eliminating barriers to eviction as well as ensuring housing regardless of documentation status.

With almost 30,000 cost burdened people in Dane County and a growing population faced with low/diverse housing stock, it is becoming more difficult to ensure housing is a human right. With rent control, tenant protections as well as eliminating the State's stronghold on giving local government autonomy to innovatively address issues like zoning, we can work collectively towards mitigating the housing crisis.
Wisconsin needs a permanent, independent, nonpartisan redistricting process. The work for a fair maps is far from over and we must pass legislation that will ensure no party can gerrymander our right to vote. I will work and support legislation that creates an independent, nonpartisan redistricting process that will help secure democracy for Wisconsin.
Comprehensive PFAS mitigation legislation, Restricting CAFOS and increasing accountability measures to polluters. Fully fund the office of Environmental Justice. Provide grants to local governments to create food waste reduction programs for schools and local business. Provide grants for organizations creating programming and building strong food ecosystems including farm to school programs, large cold storage and perishable food processing units. Increase funding for wetlands protections. Invest in bike and trails infrastructures in rural and urban communities.

For the past thirteen years, the state legislature has underfunded our k-12 public school as well as public higher education institutions. This has been compounded by a growing voucher program that allows public dollars to be used for private institutions. We know that strong public schools make for strong communities and it is imperative that we fight back against a growing education privatization movement that aims to exacerbate disparities in learning, especially for our students of color and lower income students, and creates a system of winners and losers. For the next biennium budget, I will continue to work with coalition partners and public education champions across the state to fully fund public education and increase the abysmal 33% funding for special education. Fully funding our schools will also help retain and respect our teachers who work tirelessly for our kids. We also know that hungry kids can't learn so I will continue to advocate for healthy schools meals for all.
