I have been employed in the public sector for 27 years. I am a career civil servant. In this position, I am responsible for analyzing situations and making critical decisions on a daily basis. These decisions affect the safety of the community and those around me. Collaboration with law enforcement, community stakeholders and the judicial system are critical to my position. I have served as Board Treasurer for two of my last three years on the Holmen Board of Education. I believe I have shown my decision making relies heavily on the policies of the district and I will continue to strive to make sure my views uphold the district’s mission and values.
I have to believe we all have the same vision- we want our children to have the best public education we can give them. I believe I can continue to help to achieve that. I want every student to feel they are important and worthy, regardless of race, gender, socioeconomic status or ability. I want them to accomplish goals they may have been told elsewhere they weren’t capable of reaching. Most importantly, I want them to succeed in whatever they choose and know that the Holmen School District was a part of those achievements.
In order to retain our quality staff, competitive compensation packages continue to be important. As a public servant by day, I also understand the importance of being allowed a healthy work-life balance and to feel valued as an employee. The passage of the upcoming referendum will provide assurance the district will continue to provide competitive compensation to our staff.
Collaboration with local stakeholders is an essential part of my position and I take pride in those relationships. I was elected to represent all members of the community. Additionally, I actively listen to feedback and concerns when they are presented to me by staff and administration. I enjoy attending district events to see first-hand the activities and accomplishments of the students in the district.
The main challenge facing the School District of Holmen is our continued budget deficit. The district has been relying on our fund balance to make up for the deficit and unfortunately, this is not going to sustain the district much longer. Additionally, school vouchers hurt our district. Funds that could be used here are being taken to fund private schools. Private schools are not held to the same standards and accountability as public schools. As a result of all of this, an operational referendum will now be on the ballot in the April 1st election. As the current board treasurer, I assisted in the planning of the referendum request that will not only meet our needs over the next five years, but is also fiscally achievable for the taxpayers. I am hopeful the community will continue to support the educational needs of our students and the state will eventually fulfill their promise to fund a larger portion of our school district’s budget to assist in these needs
