Community Involvement Current Mel-Min School Board Treasurer, Active member Lewis Valley Lutheran Church
My occupation as a health care supervisor has given me experience working with people, managing projects, and problem-solving issues. I am an active member in my community supporting town functions and volunteering.
I graduated from the Melrose-Mindoro School District. My family resides in the district and my children graduated from Mel-Min. I want to ensure that the quality of education is continued for future generations.
The Melrose-Mindoro School district is a smaller, rural district and attracting employees can be challenging. We recruit for qualified staff who want to be part of our Team. We think of our district as a family who all work together and support each other with our Mission - Kids Come First. All decisions we make have our students at the forefront of our minds. Working in a smaller, close-knit district is a selling point for us. We are as competitive as possible with staff salaries, although it can be tough to compete with the larger districts in the area.
I feel that I am a liaison between the school administration and the community. I am willing to listen to people's concerns and bring those concerns to administration. We all need to work together to succeed.
As with many area districts, we are facing declining enrollment which in turn results in lower state aid. We are also coming to the end of government issued Esser funds which districts received during the COVID pandemic to help with costs. Inflation, health insurance costs, and increased labor costs have also been challenging. We are implementing a full-time 4K program in 2024 to help increase enrollment and keep those young children in our district. We are exploring multiple health insurance options for our staff. We need to remain cognizant of the money the district is spending.
