Being a public servant is who I am. I have provided service to my country and community as a veteran and a school board member. These positions placed me in leadership roles both in my community and around the world. I am running for this position because I believe people expect leadership from their elected officials. While circulating nomination papers I was struck by how few people knew who their representative was or what district they resided in. When elected, I plan to be visible and active in District 27 to ensure every voice is heard and considered. I will lead, and advocate for the rural community I am familiar with and part of.
The 27th District is largely rural and as such the needs differ from those of the more urban areas of the county. I would like to see more emphasis given to infrastructure needs in the outlying areas of the county. Roads and bridges are always at the top of the list when speaking with my neighbors. The most recent budget passed by the county board did allocate more funding for road repair and maintenance but due to years of neglect and rising costs, we must find ways to increase this funding or continue to fall behind.
Affordable housing and the unsheltered population. Despite the proliferation of new developments in the greater La Crosse area, the type of housing being developed does not lend itself to low-income communities which pushes those most in need of county services further and further from the services being offered. Without access to needed services their personal situation spirals out of control. Homelessness and lack of housing is not limited to the urban areas. Market forces incentivize landlords in the outlying communities to maximize their profits as well leading to more housing insecurity for people as wages have not kept pace with the costs of housing.
As a County Board Supervisor my role will be to stay informed on current efforts to address the housing and homelessness issues. I will embrace the experts such as those leading thee recently introduced “Pathways Home” collaboration between the City of La Crosse and La Crosse County. More specifically, my role will be to understand, explain, and support such programs which benefit all La Crosse County residents. Homelessness may be more visible in the metro area, but this is not just a city issue. County resources are critical to effectively address this topic, making our community healthier and stronger.
