SWCDs are local units of government that manage and direct natural resource management programs. Districts work in both urban and rural settings, with landowners and with other units of government, to carry out actions for the conservation of soil, water, and related natural resources. I served on Burnsville’s Parks and Natural Resources Commission for six years, serving two full terms. I became vice-chair in my second year and then served as chair for the remaining four years.
I have also studied and continue to study ecopsychology, including environmental ethics. That background has helped me understand the balance between protecting our natural resources and recognizing the need for human activity and development. It has also given me a strong understanding of the connection between environmental health and human well-being, both physical and mental.
My experience on the commission taught me how important it is to turn good environmental ideas into practical programs that people can actually use and participate in.
I was also a recipient of a Landscaping grant in 2019, which allowed me to install my own Rain Garden. Protecting our soil and water is at the heart and soil of all I do.
The SWCD provides grants for programs such as Landscaping for Clean Water and Lawns Re-Imagined. I want to strengthen partnerships between the SWCD and local communities to increase education, provide resources, and help people understand what they can do to protect our soil & water—from individual homeowners to businesses. I plan to expand education and resources for restoring our oak savannas and prairies, with a goal of reducing heat islands, increasing renewable options, and exploring alternative funding sources that the SWCD may not have tapped into yet.
The SWCD can expand financial, educational, and technical assistance for individuals, buisness owners, landlords, and other property owners around how their daily activities impact our groundwater, and what they can do to improve and protect water quality.
The SWCD needs to increase advocacy activities to hold data centers and businesses/organizations that cause damage to our soil and water supplies accountable.
