I support appointments to fill vacancies for terms up to two years as a good compromise, with special primary and general elections held during the Presidential cycle. I am opposed to one-off special elections. Low turnout means most voters don't get a chance to exercise their democratic rights because they don't know the election is even happening. Yet they still have to pay the costs of the election through their taxes.
I would look for someone who is active in their neighborhood and aware of the issues. They should show a track record of involvement for the good of the community, not just for their own narrow interests. A good candidate must also have a keen interest in topics that are best dealt with at the state level rather than local or federal.
The central committee gives me an opportunity to learn about issues across the county. Small differences in geography can result in people viewing an issue through a very different lens. Understanding these different perspectives gives me a better understanding of how to approach the challenges and opportunities our county faces.
Appointments must often be made on a very compressed schedule. It is important that I stay involved in the community so I am familiar with the issues before the vacancy arises. It's also important to listen to community voices and people who have direct experience working with the candidates.
