Occupation 1st Grade Teacher
I am a 1st grade teacher at Jose Barrios Elementary in Silver City, NM. I also serve as the President of the Cobre School Board. I worked in the retail–grocery field for ten years and also worked as a court clerk for Magistrate Court. I have a Bachelor’s of Applied Science in Criminal Justice, and a Master’s of Arts in Teaching and Learning. I firmly believe in building and fostering relationships in any type of work I do, and I understand the importance of listening to people’s needs. I Believe that I do well under pressure, and I am community oriented. I have served as a legislative assistant during session at the Roundhouse, and I am now looking forward to representing District 39 there.
I believe that every child deserves access to quality education, regardless of their background. I will tirelessly be an advocate for better resources, modern classrooms, and support for both students and teachers. I will strive to bridge gaps in healthcare access, making sure that the community's well-being is a top priority. I recognize the importance of accessible healthcare for all. Criminal justice reform is at the forefront of my priorities. I envision a system that is fair, just, and rehabilitative. I will work towards creating policies that promote affordable housing options, ensuring that everyone has a place to call home. I will work to address our environmental challenges so that we can secure the best possible future for us all.
New Mexico has made significant improvements in its tax structure in the last couple of years. Nevertheless, there are still some areas where changes such as treating capital gains as normal income, and ensuring that the highest income earners pay their fair share in effective tax rates.
New Mexico has ideal conditions for the development of clean energy such as wind and solar energy production, and we should provide the education and training so that New Mexicans are ready to move into these jobs of the future. Outdoor recreation is a natural area (no pun intended) for healthy economic activity in most parts of our state. There are many business and job opportunities that operate almost exclusively online, so New Mexico needs to develop much more competitive and robust access to first rate internet statewide.
Some reforms to improve NM’s education ranking would be to focus on policies that will help to retain our high-quality teachers, as well as to attract more teachers to our profession. This obviously includes providing higher compensation for teachers and support staff. It also means investing in the teaching-learning environment so that class sizes can be reduced and teaching supplies improved. Another high priority is to continue to invest in early childhood education. The state needs to invest in high quality curriculum, science of reading practices in all grade levels, and consistency in the NMPED leadership. We must also keep in mind that it is always important to look at what other states are doing that have improved their ranking.
