Eliminate property taxes or restructure the way property taxes are calculated. The current system of valuation based on market value causes taxation on unrealized gains and inflated assessments.
The first thing we need to do is put parents back into the driver’s seat of their children’s education and then find the actual true cost of educating the average K-12 student in South Dakota. This should be the basis of funding. Then we need to prioritize education funding. We must have accountability for how public schools expend taxpayer dollars. Education funding should follow the students whether public, private, or home schooling best fits the needs of a particular student.
Our State motto is Under God the People Rule and government of, for, and by the people of South Dakota functions best when citizens of South Dakota participate. There should be strong limitations on out of state special interest groups taking advantage of our initiative/ referendum process. Our government belongs to South Dakotans.
We must insure election integrity with voter identification and citizenship verification. I strongly support robust post-election auditing and limiting dependency on technology for something as sacred as our right to elect our representatives in our republic form of government.
Our children are our future and child care is best handled by the family. Local government is closer to the people and knows unique needs to their community. This is fundamentally not a responsibility of an out of touch bureaucrat siting in an office in state government and should be left to local governments.
Out of control property taxes and the overall size of our state government. Government needs to stop picking winners and losers in economic development and focus on creating an environment where entrepreneurs can pursue their dreams. South Dakotans know best how to spend / invest their own money. Enriching private out of state corporations by using hard earned tax dollars must stop. South Dakotans must be the number one priority in state government and the hard working taxpayers should keep more of their own money to spend / invest how they themselves see fit.
