Authoritarian one party rule and the affordability crisis for basic needs. I would immediately begin bipartisan meetings to identify ways we can curb authoritarian rule and aim to introduce a bipartisan bill limiting authoritarian power for any single Governor or legislature. Second, I would seek bipartisan solutions to the homeowner's insurance crisis by proposing legislation that allows insurance companies to utilize national risk pools to support themselves. I would also work to make it a right to have access to home insurance, make it illegal for companies to drop your coverage after filing a claim or 60 days before hurricane season. I also propose an annual rate hike cap on premiums.
We need to stop the legislature from raiding the Sadowski Affordable Housing Trust Fund and dedicate those funds plus addition revenue to support local affordable housing projects. Particularly projects that are 90-100% affordable housing units. Local governments should be allowed expedited planning and permitting processes to construct these affordable housing units. Furthermore, we should allow each municipality to explore the affordable housing options that are right for their population as each municipality and population has different immediate and long term needs.
We need legislation that requires automatic voter pre-registration at 16 years old and automatic registration at 18 years old. We need to repeal harmful legislation that has purged inactive voters from the rolls, made it illegal to hand water to voters waiting in line, and the onerous legislation requiring voters to request new vote by mail ballots every election cycle. We should return 24 hour drop off boxes for absentee ballots and allow same day voter registration. Election Day should be a national holiday and we need to honor the full restoration of felon voting rights.
We need to follow the advice of the scientific environmental community in their recommendations for protecting our water quality and natural resources. National, State, and Local Parks are an excellent method of conservation and should be expanded. HD-22 has the largest collection of first magnitude springs in the world and we desperately need to update our Springs Basin Management Action Plans (BMAPs). Furthermore, I am a believer in natural rights and the right for our natural environment to exist without being irreparably damaged by human behavior.
I am voting Yes on Amendment 4 because I support the right for all pregnant Floridians to have access to abortion and all other necessary health care. The legislature should not be limiting access to health care in Florida.
I support measures that have bipartisan support including: red flag laws preventing domestic violence convicts from accessing firearms, requiring secure storage of firearms at home, funding more gun buyback programs. I oppose efforts to repeal gun safety laws passed after the horrific Parkland shooting including the effort to allow people under 21 to purchase long barrel semi-automatic rifles.
I support fully funding our public schools. I oppose the legislature's efforts to siphon public funding through school vouchers rather than funding public schools appropriately. Florida's public schools have had hundreds of millions of dollars from their capital maintenance budgets cut causing local school districts to fend for themselves. I would oppose this practice and support fully funding capital and maintenance needs. We need to end the legislative attack on academic freedom, faculty tenure, and the ideological manipulation of Florida's education curriculum to serve political parties.
