Maintaining free, fair, and secure elections is the foundation of our republic and Indiana sets an example for the rest of the country because of our strong elections system. For security, we have important laws such as voter ID and citizenship verification to make sure that only those legally eligible to cast a ballot are able to do so. We have early voting 30 days before election day, on Saturdays before election day, absentee by mail voting, and 12 hours on election day when the polls are open. Anyone who wants to vote has ample opportunity to vote in Indiana. I'll continue to support increased election security measures and make sure voting is as easy as it can be while remaining secure.
We have a very transparent government here in Indiana, where we are routinely ranked amongst the highest for government accountability. The General Assembly website (iga.in.gov) is easy to use. There, you can find all the proposed bills, amendments, votes, etc and watch all our legislative hearings and sessions. At home here in Cass and Miami Counties, I personally attend many community events, including town hall meetings, to discuss legislation plus other issues facing Indiana and our district. I regularly communicate with the hundreds of people who reach out to our office over the course of a year on a broad range of topics and work to be as accessible and representative as possible.
Housing has been a top priority for the legislature. We have passed multiple bills to help cut red tape, make it easier for new homes to be constructed, and we have a revolving loan fund so builders can help get new neighborhoods started with utilities, sidewalks, and more. I filed a bill this year (HB1130) that would have allowed both local communities and private developers to use an innovative funding model to help defray the high costs of construction that we are experiencing and pay for it with future growth within a defined area that benefits, rather than spreading the costs out to everyone in the city or county. Our READI programs will invest over $1 Billion into quality of life projects, including new housing all over the state.
Healthcare, both access to care and the cost of care, is absolutely critical to our state's success. There are many complicated challenges and we have been addressing them. First, we need to make sure healthcare providers and services are available in rural areas like ours. I authored HB1196 this session to address this issue. Second, we need to promote more transparency within the healthcare system, which should shine a light on out of control prices. While that helps, we need to take a close look at consolidation and the lack of competition in healthcare. Just like any industry, prices rise when there are too few competing. With few independent doctors or clinics now, we need to examine ways to slow or stop further consolidations.
My goal is to represent the values, ideas and concerns of our community at the Statehouse. I always appreciate your input, so please do not hesitate to reach out. You can email me at H23@iga.in.gov or call my Statehouse office at 317-232-9619.
