Receiving innkeepers’ tax

One of the largest sources of money coming into the county is property taxes, and the treasurer has the duty to collect property taxes through a billing and receipting process.
There is often confusion at tax time when someone has sold land during the year and their tax bill in December still includes land they no longer own. The reason for this is often because what was sold or purchased is a portion of a larger piece of land. The tax assessment year runs from Jan 1 – Dec 31 of each year. If you sell or purchase land from someone and their existing parcel is not conveyed in its entirety (meaning the seller kept some of the land), it is considered a split parcel. More often than not this procedure is not understood by all parties involved causing confusions and penalties. I believe the state needs to come up with more clear and concise guidelines. Would like to have funds to work delinquent customers more often.
I think the tax billing system will become more electronic. Not everyone is savvy in the electronic realm in which we live in nor do they have access or tools to deal with it.

I see more issues down the road with foreclosures and tax sales.

Working with a real diverse community will become a challenge due to the fact many may not know or understand property tax. You become a property owner you are responsible to pay property taxes yearly. If you are a renter sometimes this gets lost in the contract process, who is responsible the landlord or the renter. This puts our office in the middle of a misunderstanding.
Lifetime Cass County Resident. I am married 43 years to my husband Jerry. We have two grown children, Jaclyn Wehmeier along with her husband Clark and our awesome grandson Otto live in Franklin Indiana. Our son Jacob along with his fiancée Michelle, son Ty and adorable granddaughter Frankie (plus a third due in October) live in Lisbon Iowa. In 2013, I became the Chief Deputy Treasurer for Cass County. Over the past 10 years I have had the opportunity to become accustomed to what it takes to be a good steward of the funds for Cass county. I have acquired substantial training in these 10 years and worked directly with Indiana’s State Board of Accounts. I continue to further my knowledge and develop innovative ways to serve the community.
