As a South Montgomery County resident for 30+ years, I'm an independent seeking a Justice of the Peace free from political bias. As a lawyer, business leader, and legal educator, as well as holding the status of being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a mediator, I detected a gap in what the public understands about judicial decision-making. Judges don't need political labels!
I hold a JD from American University and a Bachelor of Civil Law from Oxford, am a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and have served as a mediator in another JP court. My career spans patent examination, judicial clerkships, Fortune 500 general counsel work, and law school teaching—breadth that gives me the legal judgment, procedural discipline, and even-handedness for a JP court.
Most JP litigants are self-represented, so a JP has a real role as a community educator—not an advocate. I'd explain procedures in plain language before proceedings begin, confirm each party understands their options, and never let unfamiliarity with legal jargon disadvantage anyone. I'd also maintain posted plain-language guides on common JP matters like evictions, small claims, and truancy.
I'd explore evening or Saturday court hours for working litigants who can't easily take time off during the week. As a trained systems engineer, I tend to view societal systems—including courts—with an engineer's eye toward greater efficiency, and I'd bring that lens to our administrative processes, technology implementation, and budgeting to ensure we're getting real value for what we spend.
