My experience as a nonprofit healthcare leader has given me a deep, real life understanding of how policy decisions affect families, patients, and communities. I also bring health policy experience, service on local boards and committees, and years of direct community engagement. Too often, policy decisions have become driven by establishment interests rather than the everyday experiences of people across the district. I will lead by listening, showing up consistently, and working to make government more accessible and accountable to everyone it serves.
My most important priority is rebuilding trust between people and their government by making representation more accessible, responsive, and grounded in the real experiences of our communities. That means showing up consistently, listening across the district, and ensuring policy decisions reflect the needs of everyday North Carolinians, not just those with the most access or influence.
Education policy and funding should center students, educators, and families, not politics. My priority is fully funding public schools, supporting teachers with competitive pay and resources, and ensuring every child - regardless of zip code - has access to safe, well-supported schools. That includes expanding access to career and technical education and making sure students have multiple pathways to success.
Tax policy should strengthen our economy while making sure the benefits reach the people who live and work here. I believe in a fair tax system that invests in public education, infrastructure, and community services. Our tax decisions should reflect our values by supporting opportunity, stability, and long-term growth across the state for all communities.
I support policies that invest in mental health services as a first line of defense, housing stability, and community-based programs, all while ensuring our justice system is fair and transparent. When people feel supported and heard, communities are safer.
North Carolina is changing, and our leadership needs to reflect that. A new generation is ready to lead - one that is connected to community every day and not just at elections, more transparent, and more willing to challenge the status quo. I’m running because it’s time for leadership that reflects the people of today, listens across differences, and builds a stronger future for all North Carolinians.
Position/philosophy statement I believe in democracy, and will persist in standing up and speaking out for our basic human rights, for our freedom and for justice in North Carolina. In unity, we must help redeem the soul of America.

I currently am a Member of the NC House of Representatives, for District 50, and in my second term. In 2025, I joined my colleagues in founding the Progressive House Caucus. In addition, I am Secretary of the Legislative Black Caucus, and maintain a position on the Board of Directors of the NC Black Alliance. Previously, I served ten years on the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, including two years as Chair. I earned my Master of Regional Planning from Cornell University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University. Also I attended Colgate Rochester Divinity School in the Master of Arts program. In 2019, I received a Certificate of Completion from the Professional Development Academy for coursework on Leadership Development.
One major priority is to defend and protect our right to vote. Attempts are underway, again, to disenfranchise eligible voters, including African Americans, Indigenous People, People of Color, Women, people of low-wealth, and young adults. Our democracy depends on access to the ballot. Now is the time to get into more good trouble and necessary trouble for the survival of morality and decency. Across NC, people are rising up and speaking out in opposition to unconscionable legislative acts—in essence, the crimes being perpetrated against our democracy and our freedom. Collectively, we must strive to preserve and advance the founding principles of our nation, as well as the human and civil rights for which our ancestors fought so valiantly.
In 1997 the North Carolina Supreme Court determined in the Leandro case that every child is entitled to a sound basic education. Leandro is evidence that we need to take critical steps to improve learning environments across North Carolina. I maintain that the NCGA has a responsibility to invest in our traditional public schools, to increase teacher pay, to reward teachers for professional development, to provide livable wages and to support staff. In addition, the NCGA needs to cease and desist from banning books, and disrespecting students based on their race/ethnicity, gender or identity. Rather, we should support diversity-equity-and-inclusion, teach America's true history, and assist LGBTQ+ students.
Taxes are necessary to provide health and human services, to fund governmental operations, and to sustain North Carolina's urban and rural communities. The state tax policy should help address those needs. Incentives, with term limits, often are used to encourage economic development, and I support offering such packages as long as good paying jobs are created for local residents, and the corporation enhances the surrounding communities and the state. Commercial and industrial developments should add to the tax base, and corporations pay their share of taxes, thus decreasing the tax burden on low- and medium-wealth families/households.
Mental illness in America is increasing, and far too many people have been and are being incarcerated when they should be receiving treatment. I would promote legislation that gives more attention to and investment in mental and behavioral health facilities and programs. Significant appropriations from our state budget would be necessary, as well as coordination with social services, healthcare, law enforcement and judicial system. In addition, I will insist on amending legislation pertaining to gun ownership, permitting and use. The proliferation of guns and firearms in our neighborhoods and communities is resulting in violence against and accidental deaths among innocent women, men and children.
Life is an intricate web, and for me, no one issue surmounts all others; rather, the issues intertwine. I represent a diverse population and therefore must address a multiplicity of concerns, all of which have value. In solidarity with like-minded people, we must take a stand, and we must persist in our fight for equality, respect, freedom and justice for all. We must refuse to be silent, and we must proclaim to the powers-that-be, that we will fight for: - public schools and a sound basic education - universal healthcare - jobs with a living wage - climate change mitigation and environmental justice - a progressive tax structure and corporations paying their share - the right to marry whomever we love - reproductive rights and control over our own bodies - the right to vote.

I bring a mix of real-world experience and community focus. I have a background in business and finance, which helps me understand budgets, accountability, and how policy impacts everyday people—not just on paper, but in real life. I’ve also spent a lot of time listening to constituents, especially those who feel overlooked, and turning those concerns into practical priorities. My strength is being accessible, prepared, and willing to do the work—showing up, listening, and advocating clearly for this district.
My top priority is making sure people in this district are actually being heard and represented. That means protecting and strengthening public education, expanding access to healthcare—especially mental health care—and making sure the economy works for working people. Everything I do would come back to listening to constituents and turning their needs into action.
Education should be fully funded, equitable, and centered on students and educators—not politics. In the coming year, my priority would be increasing funding for public schools, raising teacher pay, and expanding mental health support in schools. We also need to invest in modern classrooms, career and technical education, and early childhood education so every student—regardless of zip code—has a real opportunity to succeed.
Tax policy should support working families and invest in the things that make our economy strong—education, healthcare, and infrastructure. That means keeping taxes fair, not shifting the burden onto everyday people, and making sure corporations and the wealthiest pay their fair share. When tax policy is balanced and responsible, it helps communities thrive and creates long-term economic stability.
Improving safety means preventing harm before it happens. I would support expanding mental health services, strengthening community-based violence prevention programs, and making sure people in crisis get help instead of jail. We also need sensible gun safety measures and investments in education, housing, and economic opportunity—because safer communities are built by meeting people’s needs, not just increasing punishment.
I’m running to be an accessible, transparent representative who listens first and leads with the community’s needs in mind. I believe government works best when people feel heard, respected, and included in the process. I’m committed to showing up, communicating clearly, and working to make our district stronger for everyone.
