I am a 31 year retiree from Federal Civil service - Business Director (head) of a 3200 person organization covering 6 European countries. I was responsible for a budget in excess of $3Billion. Negotiating with foreign government agencies, trade unions, environmental and requlatory staffs. I am a Life long Republican, now the 1st ever Republican Gates County Commissioner. I resigned as the Gates County Republican chairman to run for this office. I am now working as a Director of Utilities (sewer & water) for another county. As a professional engineer I am experienced in infrastructure, Utilities, as well as roadways. I serve on the Albemarle Commission Board of Delegates working issues for the entire 10 counties.
Working to address the economic issues burdens now being faced by so many residents. Energy costs, food, housing, insurance, and so many other bills are crippling families budgets. Attempts by Raleigh special interests to hamstring the seafood industry last summer as well as restrict fresh milk sales, must be resisted to ensure this district thrives and grows. Brining our district up with broadband, roadways, and other services are needed to help our economy.
My wife is a 1st grade public school teacher and I see the abysmal pay teachers receive. With 2 high school students, and a college student, paying tuition and supporting a family is troublesome. Pay for the very people we put in charge of educating our children and trusting to make them safe during the day must be brought up while ensuring qualified teachers are able to be recruited. The lottery funds, that were supposed to be dedicated to education, seem to be siphoned off for other special projects. That needs to change.
While recent reductions in income tax are good, Serious consideration should be once again given to considering converting to a sales tax based budget. Previous attempts never made it out of the senate. Additionally, without loosing a portion of your regular pay check to income tax deductions, citizen's will be spending money as they make it and not merely handing it over to Bureaucratic institutions.
I fully support the efforts to address illegal immigration. Tax payers are now working to support efforts, programs, systems for people who couldn't follow the rules for legal immigration. Having lived overseas, I can't imagine any other nation tolerating the abuse of their borders. Further the burden of so many illegal immigrants with criminal histories, argues more severe action to be taken by our courts, versus the catch and release attitude that has grown up in our legal system.
Integrity is important. Honesty is important. The Republican Primary winner will face severe scrutiny and the importance of issues of behavior, misuse of authority, outside influences and lack of credible experience will be raised at any opportunity. The public deserves to not have their elected officials reflecting behaviors that they wouldn't accept for themselves. With our seafood and other industries under attack, we don't need friends of the bad actors, representing us in Raleigh. For these reasons, I believe I am the clear choice for this most important role at a most important time.
