Position/philosophy statement
We cannot trust our leaders in Congress to have their constituents' best interests at heart while accepting millions from special interest groups. With Trump delivering on every campaign promise, this moment is too important for weak leadership

My most important qualification to serve our district in Washington is my love for our community. I have lived in NC-04 for almost my whole life—I grew up here, I’m raising my family here. But in addition, I am proud of my long record of public service, supporting the people of North Carolina:
- Durham County Board of Commissioners
- Planned Parenthood South Atlantic Votes Board of Directors
- Chair Durham Mayor’s Council for Women
- Vice Chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party
- Political Director, Bernie Sanders 2016
Addressing the affordability crisis for working families
Across the district, families are being squeezed by low wages, rising prices, and corporate greed. My top priority is making sure working people can afford to live with dignity. That means raising the federal minimum wage, strengthening the right to unionize through the PRO Act, taking on corporate price gouging, and reining in the outsized influence of billionaires who rig the economy in their favor. It also means fighting to pass Medicare for All to ensure universal coverage, lower costs, and eliminate medical debt, so Americans are no longer crushed by medical debt.
We are staring down one of the worst economic crises for working families since the 2008 financial crisis. On top of it all, our district suffered the worst DOGE cuts of anywhere in the country, decimating our middle class. We need to address the affordability crisis on every level, by passing the PRO Act to protect our workers, reinforcing our affordable housing supply nationwide, strengthening SNAP and the social safety net, and passing a Green New Deal to create millions of new jobs. And when it comes to reinstating federal workers and researchers who drive our district’s economy, I have drafted a three-pronged policy to protect, promote, and preserve their work, preventing another mass firing of this scale.
To address political polarization—and tackle one of the most important issues for Americans across the political spectrum—we need to end the corruption warping our political system and root out money in our democracy. In Washington, I would support a slate of anti-corruption measures, many introduced by Representative David Price, such as ending corporate PACs, banning stock trading for members of Congress, and overturning Citizens United. In the Trump era, the status quo is not cutting it. We can’t sustain these conflicts of interest, which reward controversy, conflict, and stalemate, any longer. It’s time to pursue anti-corruption, so that legislators can actually hold bad actors to account.
It’s time to finally pass the Green New Deal. After years of false starts, this legislation would help us convert our economy to a clean energy hub, creating thousands of parks and green spaces and millions of jobs in the process. This is no longer legislation needed to prevent some distant threat—it’s to confront the very real consequences of climate catastrophe right here and now. I would be a strong advocate for the Green New Deal and further sweeping climate legislation to meet the demands of this moment, reinforcing our infrastructure, sparking a renewable energy economy, and creating millions of jobs in the process.

Throughout my years in public service, I've faced every challenge with the same approach: show up, do the work, and stay focused on delivering real results for North Carolina.

Over my 2 decades in public service: I’ve served on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board, I was the first African American female elected to the Orange County Board of Commissioners, and served in the North Carolina State House and Senate. I’ve seen firsthand how much this region has grown, with flourishing immigrant communities and a robust economy that continues to support good-paying local jobs and impactful research opportunities. This experience makes me equipped to continue delivering for NC-04 by supporting its public schools, protecting the jobs that this Administration continues to attack through tariffs and federal funding cuts, and fighting back against Trump’s attacks on our democracy and immigrant communities.
The deployment of Border Patrol and ICE in our community is a deliberate effort by the Trump Administration to target Black, Brown, and immigrant residents. In Congress, I have introduced legislation, the PROTECT Immigration Act, to prevent local law enforcement from collaborating with federal immigration enforcement and safeguard our immigrant communities. I have also co-sponsored numerous other bills that would ban ICE agents from wearing masks, require that they wear body cameras, and crack down on agents who abuse their power and violate people’s rights. I have also introduced Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Kristi Noem and voted against the DHS funding bill that included funding for ICE.
I believe that residents of NC-04 are currently facing an affordability crisis. The price of groceries, housing, utilities, and property taxes have gotten out of control. I am fighting to lower everyday costs. In Congress, I am standing up to Trump’s tariffs and taking on corporate price gouging that drives up costs. I am also pushing for legislation that would force developers to build housing people can actually afford and stop hedge fund speculators from buying up housing in our area that increases prices. I support a progressive tax system that provides relief for middle and low-income families while increasing taxes on large corporations and high-income earners (those who make over $400,000 annually).
Since my days serving in the State House to now serving in Congress, I’ve always been in the minority party. That means I’ve had to find common ground, common values, and common goals with my counterparts in order to make a change. I’ve forged relationships with unlikely allies due to starting conversations and after talking, realizing we actually have more in common than we have differences.
This mindset has allowed me to have my bipartisan legislation pass the House that will protect our planet while creating good-paying American jobs. It has also allowed me to find creative ways to bring home federal dollars in the midst of no appropriations bills being fully passed through Congress and signed into law.
As a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, I recognize the urgent need to create a robust sustainable energy infrastructure nationwide. In NC-04, new clean energy and environmental technologies have been critical in our region’s economic development and success. I am working with my House colleagues to build on these advancements that move our country away from our dependence on fossil fuels and build true energy independence.
We must strengthen current environmental protection and increase funding to federal agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency and National Park Service. I am a strong supporter of the Green New Deal and a member of the Sustainable Energy & Environment Coalition.
One of my top priorities in Congress is to defend healthcare. In the State Senate, I helped expand Medicaid. In Congress, I am fighting to defend it from Republican cuts. The Republican Big, Ugly Bill caused healthcare costs to skyrocket for millions of Americans. The House Democrats’ bill to extend the ACA tax credits passed the House but now the Senate needs to get this legislation to the President’s desk immediately. I do support a single-payer healthcare system, Medicare for All.

I collaborate and work with others as a team player as a critical thinker working for problem solving and providing solutions.
Promote equal and fair employment for citizens in the state of North Carolina terminating the at will to fire employees for no reason. Also supporting the teachers and educators for fair competitive salary and wages for employment.
Support healthcare and food programs for the people in financial need in North Carolina.
Vote on major bills and issues that are pressing to the American Voters for representation to improve living, healthcare, non paying insurance companies, and environmental matters to help the vast majority of citizens living in America.
Yes. Improve Global Warming laws, statutes, and regulations to help decrease environmental errosion, hurricanes, tornadoes. Also, require EPA and NC DHHS environment inspectors to actually go out into the field to conduct house, buildings, apartment, and work environments for mold and mildew health hazard inspections for report findings for fact finding for removing mold with remediation. Otherwise, get terminated for coming to work not doing any productive work on payroll as environment inspectors not performing documented health hazard inspections.
I believe in supporting matters and issues that are good for people in need like hurricane recovery, penalyzing insurance companies that only pay for one half of claims filed to save the company money shamming the customers out of their policy reimbursement for legitimate claims filed as return on their investment.
