Define the responsibilities of the Receiver of Taxes and the office they oversee.
What are your priorities for introducing enhancements and/or tech advances to your office, should you be elected?
Would you be willing to give presentations for the public to learn about office services and/or consider other innovations to inform the public about services? What would those options look like?
Bio
Brianna Baker-Stines is a homeowner who has lived in Smithtown for 34 years. She holds her Masters' in Business Administration (M.B.A.) and has worked in finance and accounting for more than 9 years. Her professional experience includes end-to-end bookkeeping, billing and accounts receivable, financial auditing and project management. Brianna has been on the Smithtown Library Special District Board of Trustees for nine years, and has served as President for two of those years. She is also a member of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System Board of Directors, representing Zone 4 (Town of Smithtown and Huntington).
The Receiver of Taxes is responsible for collecting property taxes and distributing the funds to the appropriate taxing jurisdictions, including the Town, school districts, and library districts. The office also establishes internal policies and procedures, publishes the tax warrant, issues tax notices, and maintains public records of tax collections to ensure transparency and accountability.
Modernization is a central priority of my campaign. I aim to improve taxpayer communication through email notifications and regular newsletters that keep residents informed about important deadlines, tax updates, and available resources. I also believe in maintaining up-to-date technology, including check-scanning equipment, to support efficient processing, accurate record keeping, and reliable audit trails. By investing in modern tools and procedures, we can promote greater transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the Receiver of Taxes office.
Community education and outreach are essential to an informed and secure public. I will advocate for public presentations on topics such as tax abatements and cybersecurity, helping residents understand available benefits and protect their personal information. I also pledge to regularly attend Town Board meetings and other municipal meetings to share relevant updates with taxpayers and ensure residents have access to the information they need.
