Among the most important challenges facing the Syracuse City School District are student mental health and well-being, literacy and academic achievement, chronic absenteeism, family engagement, poverty-related barriers, and equitable access to opportunities.

These challenges require a comprehensive approach: strengthening mental health supports, investing in literacy, improving attendance and student engagement, building stronger partnerships with parents and guardians, and working with community stakeholders to address poverty and other barriers that affect students and families.

Expanding access to sports, arts, clubs, and other extracurricular opportunities can also strengthen students’ sense of belonging and connection to school.

Finally, the district should set clear goals and measure results so that resources are directed toward programs that are making a meaningful difference for students. Every student should have access to the support and opportunities needed to succeed,
Parents and guardians should be partners in our schools, not spectators. But not every family has the same opportunity to participate. Immigrant families, marginalized communities, working families, and others facing time, language, or access barriers can be underrepresented in PTOs and school decision-making.

We should strengthen PTOs in schools where family participation is lower by using data to identify gaps, expanding targeted outreach, providing translation and flexible meeting options, and meeting families where they are in the community.

The district should also use data to determine where additional family-engagement staff, resources, or partnerships are needed. The goal should be to make sure every school has strong family involvement and that every parent and guardian has a meaningful voice in their child’s education.
