The way to address the most important challenges is to elect legislators who take initiative, who can assess, analyze and plan, and who use common sense to achieve goals. Someone who claims to not "just waste money" then leads the charge to throw away multiple thousands of dollars in unnecessary potential legal fees doesn't have our best interests at heart. We need leaders with vision, and who marshal the necessary resources to bring sound ideas to fruition. Instead, we had Democrats voting against early spending measures for a project that, thanks to the Republicans, positions our region for unparalleled success. Insufficient housing, dilapidated infrastructure, and NYS's outrageous taxes are our greatest challenges but they're not insurmountable if our legislators prioritize wisely and solve problems, instead of creating more. Leadership doesn’t mean avoiding risks. It means taking the right risks deliberately, with proportionate benefits, safeguards and accountability to taxpayers.
I will ensure those qualities the way I did as a school administrator--assessing needs by seeking constituents' input and analyzing data, strategizing, implementing solutions, monitoring results, then making necessary adjustments. An example of transparency during my school superintendency was the creation of a budget committee comprised of community members who analyzed the proposed budget and recommended changes. The results were the highest passing rate for a vote and approval for a major capital project. Examples of accountability were the removal of the district from the state comptroller's fiscal stress list while adding cash back into reserves, and increasing the graduation rate by nearly twenty points. An experienced communicator with two degrees in speech-language pathology, I enjoy finding ways for others to benefit from my skills. For example, I operate a communication system for around 130 neighbors. My abilities and background would be unique assets to the legislature.
