U.S. Senator

Each senator is elected to a six-year term serving the people of this specific state. Among other duties, senators introduce bills and resolutions, offer amendments and serve on committees. The Constitution sets three qualifications for service in the U.S. Senate: age (at least thirty years of age); U.S. citizenship (at least nine years); and residency in the state a senator represents at time of election. I have no desire to become a Senator and go to Washington to join the bickering that we hear on a daily basis. I want to stay home and raise my kids, work in my garden, and maybe even go fishing once in a while. But I have watched as my country has become utterly corrupt. Bribery is no longer hidden and barely even recognized it has become so brazen. I have been waiting a long time to see a candidate I am excited to support, whom I can be confident would serve with integrity. I have ideas that I know our country needs and my hope is that at the very least someone who will be successful might take them and use them to make my country a better place.
The most important challenge is money in politics. Other challenges such as climate change, energy and housing prices, divisions and corruption all are protected from corrective action by the wall of money erected to keep electing feckless rubber stamps from one cycle to the next. No issue can be tackled, no brilliant solution enacted until we untether our representatives from the corrupt flow of money that elects them.
The purpose of the federal government is to ensure that no wealthy individual or corporation may use their overwhelming resources and power to steal the basic rights and dignity of our citizens. I believe that not only should we have a social safety net, but that we should raise it off the ground. The government is for people, not corporations. If the private sector fails to adequately deliver basic services at reasonable rates and without causing harm then the government should intervene to enforce curbs on waste and greed.
I support indexing the minimum wage to the MIT Living Wage calculator set to single Adult with no children. This would be on a county by county basis of the employer with automatic annual adjustment on January 1st. I would obviously be a yes vote for any raise to the paltry $7.25 federal minimum wage, but without making it grow with inflation it will always leave our most vulnerable neighbors behind.
