The single most important factor that influenced me to run for office was my love for my community. I grew up in my district and spent most of my career teaching students from my district. This allowed me the opportunity to see the struggles facing so many families and a legislature that was more focused on harmful rhetoric than real solutions. I wanted to bring the real voices of my district to the capitol and prioritize real governance over partisan politics.
Education, safety, and opportunities are important things young professionals are looking for in where they decide to live and potentially raise a family. We are currently in the bottom five for education and we are in the top 20 for violent and property crimes. I want to work to retain and recruit highly qualified teachers and support employees by offering higher wages, fewer unfunded state mandates, and more access to higher education and training. We must also look at the root causes of such high crime rates and provide real long term solutions such as increased substance abuse treatment, more job training programs and higher education access, more affordable housing, and higher wages for workers. Addressing these issues will also make us more attractive to employers without the need for as many special incentives and ensure these businesses stay in Oklahoma.
I will support legislation to remove unfunded state mandates which overburden school districts and school staff reducing their ability to provide high quality education. I will support legislation that removes the Parental Choice Tax Credit Program which reduces funding available for public schools and drives students out of public schools leading to school consolidations and closures. I will continue to oppose legislation that furthers school vouchers and any other efforts to give public funds to private schools. I will also oppose efforts to remove local control of school districts..
Our current tax structure is inadequate. Our state is built on a system of regressive taxes that have strangled the middle class and made Oklahoma one of the poorest states in the union. Our tax system relies too much on the goodwill of corporations and executives who ultimately have a responsibility to their shareholders, not the communities they operate in. We need to raise taxes on the mega-corporations, and lower taxes for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and regular working-class Oklahomans to ensure a healthy economy going forward.
