Having grown up in public housing, I appreciate government efforts to provide affordable housing. I've been at the forefront of the push to increase our national housing supply, securing federal money to build thousands of affordable housing units in our district, and developing legislation like the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. As a Union Ironworker for 18 years, I know what it's like to live paycheck to paycheck. Amid the rising cost of living, working families are relying on Congress more than ever. I'm fighting to protect Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, HeadStart, and other critical programs from Trump’s devastating cuts. I helped provide $137 billion to help families pay high ACA premiums and expand healthcare tax credits.
Our country needs comprehensive immigration reform. We are a nation of immigrants. That has been our strength throughout our history. We should design an immigration process that is fair, orderly, and sustainable, balancing our ability to provide safe refuge and a path to citizenship for asylum seekers, while also welcoming immigrants who are bringing skills and talents that we desperately need. Our immigration reform must also radically re-engineer ICE as I supported in our Democratic proposal earlier this year. We would require ICE agents to remove their masks, wear name plates and body cameras, revamp the recruitment and hiring process, and require a longer and more rigorous training academy to root out unsuitable candidates.
Much of the criticism of our election process has been delusional. As a member of the House Oversight Committee, I reviewed the lawsuits that Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani brought after the 2020 elections. Virtually all were dismissed for lack of evidence. It's clear that President Trump is undermining the electoral process. We must defeat the SAVE Act and executive actions that disenfranchise voters. I’ve introduced the Vote by Mail Protection Act to void Trump’s unconstitutional executive order to seize control of elections and eliminate mail-in voting for millions of Americans. I'm working with pro-democracy groups to fight voter suppression efforts in court and prepare for attempts by the President to interfere in upcoming elections.
The 8th Congressional District includes coastal areas from Boston's North End to the Town of Hingham and inland areas like Norwood - all of which are highly vulnerable to climate change, sea level rise, and severe weather events. The climate crisis requires urgent collective action and comprehensive solutions. I believe we must build on the historic climate investments delivered in the Inflation Reduction Act (which I supported) by enacting legislation that re-dedicates federal resources towards transitioning to a clean energy economy and modernizing the electric grid. I’m also proud to have secured hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding to help communities in the 8th District build climate-resilient infrastructure.
I believe an unregulated AI industry presents an existential threat to our way of life. As Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Artificial Intelligence and Cryptocurrency, I am leading efforts to place guardrails on AI development. I’ve also examined AI use in national security, foreign policy, and federal law enforcement. I believe any AI technology deployed by the federal government must be explainable to users and subject to strict regulation, ethical standards, continuous independent oversight, accountability to human chains of command, and stringent disclosure requirements. For the U.S. to lead on AI, our use must reflect democratic values, prioritize due process of law, and allow for redress in cases of wrongful government action.
President Trump exceeds his constitutional and statutory authorities on a daily basis, and the Supreme Court is too often a rubber stamp for his executive overreach. It’s our constitutional duty as lawmakers to use every tool to block unlawful executive action and ensure that our government is accountable to the people. On the Oversight Committee, I participated in both successful Impeachment investigations and proceedings against President Trump. We continue to challenge Trump’s conflicts of interest, national security breaches, and law enforcement abuses to prepare an investigative record to hold Trump and his Administration fully accountable in a Democratic Majority. We must also restore independence to the judicial branch.
