Petoskey Public Schools LSD Board Member {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

From the Michigan Association of School Boards (masb.org): The primary function of the board of education is to oversee the education of students in the community. Educational programs conducted at the elementary, middle and high school levels are most familiar. Many local and intermediate school districts also operate preschool and adult education programs for large numbers of people. Under Michigan law, a board of education has the ultimate responsibility for school district operations. Among other things, the Revised School Code gives each board of education general powers to: Educate students. Provide for the safety and welfare of students. Acquire and dispose of school property. Determine matters relating to school employees and contractors. Control the expenditure and receipt of school funds. Make joint agreements and cooperative arrangements. Specific provisions in the Revised School Code also assign responsibilities to school boards in areas such as: Setting the curricula and courses taught in the schools. Employing a superintendent, other administrators, teachers and support personnel. Levying local taxes to run the schools and adopting a budget. Deciding whether or not to furnish transportation for pupils. Negotiating with employee unions regarding salaries and other conditions of employment.

During my first term as a school board member, I have placed a priority on building relationships with school district staff, families and the local community. Sustaining these relationships is important to me and I will continue to work collaboratively to support communication, ideas and solutions.
As a school board member, I am one of five members who work together to ensure that our local school district has the resources it needs to uphold the school's vision and mission, which leans on the participation and involvement of staff, students, families and community stakeholders. Therefore, I hope to remain an approachable board member who can listen to concerns and ideas from staff, students, families and community members and provide open and transparent communication among all stakeholders.
Throughout my first term on the school board, I have leaned on school newsletters, board meetings, one on one conversations in the community, and have had an active presence in each school to stay informed of issues that affect our school district. I would continue this approach if I am elected to serve a second term. In addition, I am a parent of two PHS students and feel my experience as a parent in the district also helps keep me informed.

I am invested in our community. I have a sophmore at our wonderful high school, my husband and I own a local plumbing company and I am a local real estate agent. I understand our community and have a passion for our students to excel academically and as athelets. To be career and/or college ready and also be a conduit for our staff and stakeholders.
First and foremost is to understand the priority and be proactive not reactive. Be present at as many events that are addressing our housing issue as that is a big priority and make sure I am spreading the word and information to keep our community informed.
As I mentioned in the last question it will be important to attend events that our stakeholders feel are a concern and really be a part of as much as I can. Being present and available.

For 15 years I taught writing at North Central Michigan College while raising my two young daughters. I learned a lot about how a strong, effective administration can support teachers, and thus the entire community, with careful listening and understanding. I also have a background in journalism, where I learned the value of precision-tailored communication. I also worked in nonprofit management, where I learned what makes a good board—it’s one that supports administrators but isn’t afraid to challenge ideas in search of the best solutions.

And most importantly, I’m a Petoskey mom. My older daughter just graduated after a lifetime at the Public Schools of Petoskey (she’s now thriving in college), and my younger daughter is a sophomore at the high school. I’ve seen how the schools have supported my girls and helped them bloom, and I’ve seen firsthand what the schools do well, what it’s like to be a Petoskey kid, and what those kids need in order to grow up and thrive.
To me, the schools are succeeding when kids are thriving—not just learning, but growing, challenging, experimenting, and becoming stronger thinkers and vibrant community members. I will always look for the solutions it takes to make kids thrive, from ensuring they’re all adequately fed to seeking ways to provide arts opportunities to making sure every student feels a sense of belonging. Petoskey already does a great job—I know this firsthand—but there are opportunities to deepen the practice and strengthen the entire community as a result.
My journalism background makes me a listener by nature. I plan to be at the schools on a regular basis, chatting with parents, connecting with teachers and administrators, and doing my best to hear what you need.
