I was motivated to run because I know schools thrive with thoughtful governance. I’ve seen the dedication of the educators and families and appreciate their ongoing hard work. Strong schools don’t happen by accident. They require people willing to listen, ask questions and make difficult decisions. I see board service as an opportunity to use both my professional perspective and my commitment to the community to help support students, staff and families.
I have been working in my dream job as a School Counselor for the past 14 years. I’ve spent my career listening, helping people solve problems, communicate effectively, collaborate with stakeholders and work through various challenges. I am confident that these skills and experiences will support my work and dedication to the students, families and staff of Somerville.
Technology, social media, and artificial intelligence are here to stay, and as educators, we must embrace rather than resist them. Meeting students where they are means using the platforms they engage with daily to share resources, communicate effectively, and celebrate success. With these tools comes the responsibility to guide young people. Simply warning students about digital dangers is not enough; we must teach them how to navigate challenges safely, utilize resources responsibly, and know where to seek help when needed. As educators, parents, and mentors, our role is to model lifelong learning and help students adapt thoughtfully as technology evolves, empowering them to use social media and AI safely and purposefully.
The school district's budget is an extremely complex entity. While I've worked in education for over 20 years, combing through a budget is not something I have done. As a school board member, I will attend required and supplemental training, one of which covers budget, finance and funding. Prior to training, I will look to experienced board members for their support in understanding the complexities of the budget.
I know that tax increases and spending are always at the forefront of residents' minds. I believe that a district's budget should always endeavor to provide the best education, support and resources to all of our children. This includes competitive salaries for educators in an effort to obtain and retain the best. This will also include funding to maintain and upgrade facilities and technology.
As the treasurer of the Somerset County School Counselors Association, former bank auditor and bookkeeper of my father's business I have managed small budgets and know the importance of accuracy and transparency. I intend to utilize these skills as I learn and navigate the school board budget.
