The New York State Assembly is the lower chamber of the New York State Legislature. Alongside the New York State Senate, it forms the legislative branch of the New York state government and works alongside the governor of New York to create laws and establish a state budget. My top three priorities are bringing down the cost of living, including lowering property taxes, utility costs, healthcare and childcare expenses; keeping our communities safe by supporting law enforcement, strengthening gun-safety measures and investing in effective violence-prevention programs; and investing in our future through strong public schools, affordable higher education, clean drinking water, environmental protection and an economy that creates opportunities for working families and small businesses.
New York should pursue practical policies that reduce emissions while protecting communities from the impacts of climate change. That means increasing renewable energy capacity, including wind and solar, improving energy efficiency, modernizing our electric grid and investing in public transportation. We should also place a moratorium on new AI data centers, which consume enormous amounts of energy, strain the electric grid and can drive up costs for families and small businesses. On Long Island, we must protect our drinking water, preserve open space and strengthen coastal infrastructure and storm resiliency. We can address climate change while keeping energy affordable and ensuring that families are not forced to bear an unfair share of the cost.
Promoting social and racial justice starts with ensuring every New Yorker has a fair opportunity to succeed. I support protecting voting rights, combating discrimination, antisemitism and hate crimes, expanding access to quality education and healthcare, and ensuring equal treatment under the law. We should make SUNY and community colleges tuition-free for New York students and expand access to trade schools and workforce training so that every student has a pathway to a good-paying job. We should also support policies that create economic opportunity, strengthen communities and remove barriers that have historically prevented too many New Yorkers from getting ahead.
The Supreme Court's decision in Louisiana v. Callais significantly limits the use of race-conscious redistricting remedies under the federal Voting Rights Act. New York should respond by vigorously protecting equal access to the ballot and ensuring that every community has a meaningful voice in our democracy. I would support fully enforcing and, where necessary, strengthening New York's John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act, including its protections against voter disenfranchisement, language-access requirements and safeguards against discriminatory changes to election procedures.
