I believe Congress must focus on lowering everyday costs by expanding affordable housing, reducing healthcare expenses, and creating good-paying jobs. We must also invest in community policing, violence prevention, and mental health services to keep our neighborhoods safe. Finally, we must protect voting rights by ensuring every American has fair and equal access to the ballot.
The federal government must enforce campaign finance laws, and protect the integrity of our elections. By strengthening transparency and disclosure requirements , we can protect our democracy from the outsized influence of bad actors. I co-sponsored and voted for the For the People Act, H.R. 1, a bill that would do just that and includes a voluntary small-donor matching system. These reforms, if enacted, would help ensure that all Americans have a meaningful voice in our elections.
The Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais forces America back to time where the full representation of all Americans was virtually forbidden by law. This decision makes it easier for Republican-controlled legislatures to draw maps that weaken minority representation and benefit their party. I believe in a republic where every person has the right to be represented by the person of their choosing - one who reflects the ideals and values of their community. Vote dilution strips that from minority communities and that’s not right. Everyone’s voices should be counted equally and fairly at the ballot box. This is why I co-sponsored and voted for the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore our right to vote and defend the integrity of our democracy.
During the Biden administration, Congressional Democrats drafted and passed into law, the Inflation Reduction Act, the largest investment in climate and clean energy in US history. Billions of dollars were invested to tackle the climate crisis, advance environmental justice, grow our clean energy manufacturing, and put the United States on a path to be a net-zero economy by 2050. Although the Trump administration has reversed key climate protections and investments, I believe the federal government has a responsibility to prepare for our nation’s future and part of that must be addressing climate change by strengthening our resilience, supporting clean energy development, and disaster preparedness.
As the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I believe the United States has a responsibility to participate and lead in international institutions to advance peace, economic stability, and protect human rights. By working with our allies, we can address global challenges while protecting American interests and maintaining U.S. leadership.
