Brown County School BoardThe school system is governed by a five member nonpartisan board of trustees who are elected to serve four year staggered terms. Two of the members are elected at large; three must reside in the district from which they run. The school board sets policy and hires a superintendent to administer the system.The district boundaries for the three (3) Shool Board seats elected by district are identical to the boundaries of each of the three (3) County Commissioner districts.One (1) board member shall physically reside in District I during the term of their office;One (1) board member shall physically reside in District II during the term of their officeOne (1) board member shall physically reside in District III during the term of their officeTwo (2) board members shall physically reside anywhere in the three (3) resident districts of Brown County Schools during the term of their office with not more than any two from any one district.All board member candidates are to be voted on by all registered voters of the County of Brown County.School Board by laws, policies and reports to the community can be found on the Brown County Schools website: https://www.browncountyschools.com/about-bcs/district-info-school-board/

The role of a school board member is to approve the budget of the school corporation, establish a vision for the school system, work with the superintendent, set policies for the school district and serve as a bridge between the community and the school corporation.
One strategy is to examine the root causes of chronic absenteeism. Why students are opting not to attend school. I believe one on one discussions with repeat offenders is needed to make that assessment.
As we all know Covid led to dramatic set backs in students’ learning. I believe we are still dealing with the effects of that. I believe educator training dealing with ways to facilitate learning recovery should be considered.
As with most cases involving the student population, one on one intervention is best to find out the root causes of bullying or other disruptive behavior. That said, bullying and any behavior that interrupts the learning environment should not be tolerated.
Respect for oneself as well as respect for others is key to having engaged citizens. Care for the community, the environment, and others beyond one’s self should be promoted in schools. Schools should stress these values in their individual buildings.
A school is made up of diverse individuals. I feel schools should tailor courses to projected goals of each student.
