Biographical Information
What is the most important issue facing your Single Member District (SMD) and how do you intend to address it?
How will you engage with residents to be an effective Commissioner, especially reaching those who are unfamiliar with the role and value of ANCs?
QualificationsI’ve lived on Capitol Hill for seven years, and in the Washington area for more than three decades. I’m a retired journalist who is curious about the world and in constant search for answers. My career included jobs in newspaper, on radio and for international news agencies. I care about this city and our community. After a half century of chasing stories for publication or broadcast, I’m now ready to work to preserve the qualities that give Capitol Hill the feeling of living in a community.
Traffic and pedestrian safety, especially near elementary and middle schools, along with affordable housing are key concerns for residents on the Hill. We need to promote more affordable housing, without making our neighborhoods afterthoughts as developers profit. Economic development, especially along H Street NE and at the RFK Stadium site, must be beneficial to ANC6A as well as metropolitan Washington. Pedestrians, bicyclists and scooter users need to share spaces, which may require on-street reminders and additional signs. Finally, the city government - and each of us - must work harder to fight the mounting rodent population by being more careful with trash buckets and alleys. We also should think about the future, and the best way to locate charging stations for electric vehicles.
I plan to communicate regularly with my ANC6A04 neighbors, chiefly by email and online forums. As a retired journalist, I’m accustomed to using email and social media to reach audiences. I also look forward to meeting constituents on regular SMD walks that I will publicize. My wife and I walk every day, to the market, to appointments, even to Nationals Park, which is 45 minutes on foot from our row house. In nice weather, we spend a lot of time on our front porch and we’re always happy to sit and chat with neighbors. Eventually, I’d like to organize meet-ups to hear from residents about community issues, concerns and complaints. We even have treats for our neighbors’s dogs, who always stop by our porch for a snack.
